A lengthy and dense film packed with a handful of great performances, The Place Beyond the Pines has great ambition but not nearly enough accomplishment.
Looper may have been the opening night film, but in my mind, Jason Reitman truly helped to usher in the opening of this year’s Toronto International Film Festival with his live reading of American Beauty.
There is clearly a lot of ambition to The Loved Ones and the near-brilliant leading performances help make the film a unique and terrifying experience.
While The Dictator may appear different than Borat and Brüno, it is very much the same idea as both films, packed with the same jokes and new ones that are more disturbing than they are hilarious.
