Jason Segel (The Muppets) and Drew Pearce (Iron Man 3) have been tapped by Warner Bros. to write and direct a brand new LEGO spinoff. Titled The Billion Brick Race, this is now the fourth movie on the studio's slate linked to last year's uber-successful The LEGO Movie. Ninjago will arrive next year, The LEGO Batman Movie is set for 2017 and The LEGO Movie 2 will follow in 2019. No release date has been announced for the Segel-Pearce spinoff as yet, but it's highly likely to land sometime after the first LEGO sequel.
After delivering the unexpectedly harrowing Spring Breakers, director Harmony Korine is choosing to dabble in a new realm of crime for The Trap. Swapping out the sunny undertones of his 2012 offering, this next jaunt hones in on the same Floridian setting for an albeit much darker tale of revenge. The gritty caper has now caught the eye of Focus Features, who are angling to lock down distribution on the pic. And it's no surprise considering the calibre of talent now attached.
Kevin Smith's Mallrats 2 is proliferating the filmmaker's social media streams in the best way possible. The writer-director last week confirmed that he had begun developing a sequel to his 1995 cult classic Mallrats. In the days that have followed a number of images featuring stars of the flick have cropped up on Smith's Twitter and Instagram. Whether they are holding up two fingers or referencing a specific - ahem, chocolate-covered pretzel anyone? - scene the fact of that matter is clear. The gang is getting back together.
FX series Fargo drops its second season later this year with a juicy addition to its cast now confirmed. Bruce Campbell has signed on for a cameo role as Ronald Reagan prior to his election into office. As season 2 has been described as a prequel, the events therein are expected to take place in the late '70s and are "set against the cultural transformation that was going on at that time.”
In typical Bryan Singer fashion, the director has taken to social media to announce the newest arrival to his X-Universe. Via his Instagram account, Singer revealed that newcomer Lana Condor will board the sizeable cast of X-Men: Apocalypse. She will play Jubilation Lee - known by comic fans as the cleverly-abbreviated Jubilee.
Michael Lannan and Andrew Haigh took viewers on a journey through a San Francisco rarely seen onscreen in their gritty, real-life series Looking. For two seasons the show chronicled the exploits of three gay men - Patrick, Dom and Agustin - as they navigated the city’s dating scene. Their stories unfolded over the course of 18 episodes, the last of which dropped this past Sunday. However, due to low ratings, the cable network has since decided to cancel the series.
After a 14 year absence Steven Spielberg is returning to Warner Bros. to direct Ready Player One. Based on the 2011 novel by Ernie Cline the story revolves around a young boy whose obsession with a virtual reality world called OASIS leads him on a mission to uncover a video game easter egg. The studio snapped up the rights back in 2010 before the novel had even hit shelves and has since been narrowing down a shortlist of potential filmmakers to bring Cline's futuristic vision to the big screen.
Former Timelord Matt Smith is rumored to be in contention for the lead role in Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them. According to a report (via MTV News), the Doctor Who star is "tipped for the role" after Benedict Cumberbatch apparently turned it down. The two sources cited in MTV's post - The Sun and the Irish Examiner - don't boast the best track record when it comes to solid intel, but there is still the possibility that Smith may indeed be in talks.
A sequel to Super Troopers has been on the cards ever since the first outing floored audiences back in 2001. Now, the Broken Lizard crew are promising to deliver Super Troopers 2 with 20th Century Fox locked in to distribute. The small snag? The studio needs to know that fans REALLY want it, so the $2 million required to produce to the feature will be acquired through crowdfunding. An Indiegogo campaign has since gone live, offering fans perks and incentives for donating to the movie's budget.
The latest addition to Roland Emmerich's twenty-year late sequel Independence Day 2 is a little less unexpected than last week's newbie. Vivica A. Fox, who portrayed Will Smith's stripper girlfriend Jasmine Dubrow in the 1996 original, has officially signed on to reprise her role. Emmerich announced the news via Twitter:
