I've gone back and forth on HBO's The Leftovers throughout its first season, which always felt like two shows forcefully pressed up against one another.
After last week's incredible "Creatures Of The Night," perhaps The Strain's most gripping installment to date, "The Disappeared" feels like a bit of a comedown. That's not to say that it's without its merits, but this week's episode seems more like filler than past hours, not delivering many great action sequences or particularly enjoyable scares.
Heading to the fall, few first-time feature filmmakers have as much clout as Ned Benson, whose ambitious romantic drama The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby will arrive in three different forms in the coming months (Them, which condenses the story of a relationship by using both viewpoints, arrives in September, to be followed by Him and Her, a duology telling the same story one perspective at a time). And despite all the work that went into that project, the up-and-comer isn't resting on his laurels until Eleanor Rigby hits theaters - news has emerged that he's just been hired by The Weinstein Company to rewrite its Starbucks movie, tentatively titled How Starbucks Saved My Life.
Charlie St. Cloud star Zac Efron already proved he could do a mean Robert De Niro impression in this summer's comedy smash hit Neighbors, and now we've learned that the actor will be joining forces with the acting legend himself for an upcoming comedy titled Dirty Grandpa.
Celebrated British director Mike Leigh was last in the headlines for 2010's Another Year, but buzz that has been building since this year's Cannes Film Festival suggests the helmer may be unveiling his greatest accomplishment to date this fall with Mr. Turner. At first glance, the biopic of artist J.M.W. Turner seems like an odd project for Leigh - but then one sees that Timothy Spall, a long-time Leigh collaborator, is in the title role, and it all starts to make a little more sense.
Jason Blum's Blumhouse Productions has been ridiculously busy of late, so much so that it's almost impossible to keep track of all its upcoming projects. And you'll be forgiven if Blumhouse's take on The Town that Dreaded Sundown slipped through the cracks for you - the horror redo has been flying very much under the radar. That's changing today, however, with the unveiling of two official images from the flick.
Marvel has been coming under fire in recent months for a lack of female-led superhero movies in its existent and planned Cinematic Universe, and now Oscar-nominated actress Jessica Chastain, known for playing strong-willed female protagonists in films like Zero Dark Thirty and The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby, is getting in on the discussion.
Hot on the heels of Netflix snagging rights to all episodes of NBC's hit drama series The Blacklist (for a reported $2 million per episode), the streaming giant has struck again, buying up rights to Fox's Gotham in what is believed to be the first deal made for a broadcast show yet to premiere.
Lev Grossman's urban fantasy novel The Magicians has been slowly making its way to the small screen since the book's 2009 publication, and since Syfy became involved last month, work on the pilot episode of a Magicians series has accelerated. Now, we're hearing that the network has tapped Another Earth director Mike Cahill to helm the show's first installment.
