Though there has been a surplus of YA novels being adapted for the big screen, from the hits like Twilight and Divergent to the misses like Vampire Academy and The Mortal Instruments, don't count out Sony Pictures' upcoming The 5th Wave, based on Rick Yancey's novel of the same name. Sure, there's a love triangle (sort of) at its center, but anyone who's read Yancey's novel can attest to the fact that The 5th Wave is way, way better than most of the books that end up on the road to the big screen. Personally, it's my favorite YA novel since Suzanne Collins' The Hunger Games.
We've been getting a number of intriguing teasers for Disney and Marvel's upcoming big-screen collaboration Big Hero 6 lately, including character profiles and posters, but we had yet to see a full-length trailer for the movie (I'm not counting that cutesy but uninformative teaser trailer) - until today.
Later this month, we'll finally see Lucy, La Femme Nikita director Luc Besson's latest female-powered action extravaganza. It's hard to know whether or not we should be excited for this movie. Though it does star the excellent Scarlett Johansson and Morgan Freeman, not to mention Oldboy's Choi Min-Sik as a baddie, the last good movie Besson directed was The Fifth Element, way back in 1997. That's not to say that the action auteur has been resting on his laurels since then, having contributed to a great many flicks including District B13 and Taken. But when you see Luc Besson's name in Lucy's marketing campaign, it just doesn't mean quite what it used to.
Anyone who read and enjoyed Tom Rob Smith's period thriller novel Child 44, set in Joseph Stalin's Soviet Union, was likely thrilled when Locke star Tom Hardy landed the lead role of disgraced MGB agent Leo Demidov, who investigates a long string of grisly child murders. Physically, it was pretty damn perfect casting, and it also fueled fans' hopes that director Daniel Espinosa wouldn't be toning down the book's violent, disturbing content. After all, Hardy has built his career playing complex, disturbed individuals (see his stellar work in Bronson). Now, we finally know when we'll find out whether Hardy nailed the role - and more importantly, whether the other main storytelling strengths of Child 44 have survived the trip to the big screen. Summit just set the thriller to open on April 17th next year.
Animated horror films are few and far between, but occasionally someone gets a great idea for one - see Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust - that makes us remember the genre can be more than just Alvin And the Chipmunks Meet whichever movie monster happens to need a paycheck at the time. It's too early to say whether Malevolent is going to be one of those diamonds in the rough - but initial information about the pic is promising.
It's been a while since we've heard anything about Harry Potter alum Daniel Radcliffe's upcoming collaboration with Piranha 3-D director Alexandre Aja, a horror flick titled Horns, but today, ahead of the project's debut at Comic-Con, RADiUS-TWC is bringing us a new trailer, poster and release date for the movie.
Somehow, the 2015 Oscar race is already looking almost as promising as this fall's. David O. Russell will be reteaming with his Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle star Jennifer Lawrence for the biopic Joy, Alejandro González Iñárritu will finally unveil his Tom Hardy/Leonardo DiCaprio revenge thriller The Revenant, Steven Spielberg will be in the mix with an untitled Cold War thriller set to star Tom Hanks and Scott Cooper is also set to release his Whitey Bulger pic Black Mass, which stars Johnny Depp and Joel Edgerton. Now, we've got another exciting addition to the latter half of 2015 - Martin Scorsese's Silence is being tentatively planned for release next November.
Yahoo is continuing its campaign to win over TV lovers everywhere with word that the company's streaming service Yahoo Screen is angling to pick up the late, lamented Fox military comedy Enlisted for another season, as it did with cancelled cult fave Community last month.
Today, we've received our first look at Joseph Gordon-Levitt as daredevil Philippe Petit in Robert Zemeckis' The Walk. And though it's in no way an official shot from the movie, hailing from Facebook, we're still excited to see Gordon-Levitt in character for the first time.
"I'm not going to forgive you," promises Bruce Willis in the newest trailer for action-thriller The Prince. "Only God forgives." The movie, which also stars Jason Patric and John Cusack, looks like it's going to be chock-full of equally silly one-liners - and the fact that it's getting a simultaneous roll-out in theaters and on VOD doesn't bode well for its quality. That said, there's always a place for bargain-bin action schlock, and The Prince appears to check all the boxes nicely.
