In the past few years, we've seen a number of creative takes on Mary Shelley's iconic horror novel Frankenstein, some much better than others. To name a few of the most high-profile ones, Tim Burton delivered a gorgeously animated kiddie flick called Frankenweenie, Stuart Beattie directed the action-fueled, thinly-written fantasy thriller I, Frankenstein, and Showtime very recently compelled us by recounting Doctor Victor Frankenstein's origin story on horror series Penny Dreadful.
We've seen some pretty tantalizing teases emerge from the set of Colin Trevorrow's Jurassic World, including character images, a dented construction truck, concept art, a patch and a potential map of the park. Today brings another one of those teasers, though it seems clear that Trevorrow is ramping up to unveil a shot of the long-anticipated sequel's dinosaurs themselves.
Liam Neeson may have launched his career with serious fare like Schindler's List, but the moment Taken ignited at the box office, it became obvious that the actor had found his niche. Since that modern action classic, he's led The A-Team, unraveled an assassination plot in Unknown, faced down wolves in The Grey and once again combatted human traffickers in Taken 2. The actor's formula for these action flicks is pretty clear-cut. Neeson plays a gruff but likable badass, who's hurtled into an impossible situation and forced to fight his way out, all the while maintaining his intrinsic dignity.
Late last night, Nikki Finke (formerly of Deadline) reported that Chronicle scribe Max Landis was set to work on a draft of Ghostbusters 3. In her report, she claimed that Landis wouldn't be penning a new version of the script so much as polishing it up. Unfortunately, tweets for Landis have poured some cold water on that report - though the screenwriter claims that he would love to work on it if given the chance.
As much as it pains me to write this, one of the most anticipated book adaptations hitting screens in the near future - right up there with new Divergent and The Hunger Games installments - is Fifty Shades of Grey, based on a Twilight-fanfiction-turned-erotic-romance that somehow became the fastest-selling paperback of all time. Fans of the steamy book by E.L. James are likely scrutinizing the web daily for news about the adaptation, though very little has come out about the movie since it wrapped production in February. Today, however, those fans will be thrilled to get their first real look at mysterious billionaire Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan), whose BDSM-fueled romance with college student Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson) powers Shades and two other books.
Ever since his Academy Award-winning turn in Leaving Las Vegas, Nicolas Cage has taken on a few decent roles (including in Adaptation. and Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call - New Orleans) and lots of bizarre ones (including in meritless pieces of dreck like Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance and the upcoming Rage). However, he may be in for a career resurgence thanks to his amazing performance in Joe, which is no doubt one of the best films the actor has ever been associated with. And as the film prepares to hit Blu-Ray and DVD on June 17th, we're pleased to be able to exclusively share with you a clip from "The Making of Joe" featurette.
Last week's "Closer Than Sisters" was a pleasant diversion for Penny Dreadful but a diversion all the same, and you can feel show creator John Logan trying to make up for lost time in "What Death Can Join Together," an episode that hits the ground running and rarely slows down. At times, that acceleration of, well, everything in Penny Dreadful means that certain character moments seem a little rushed (and that's a shame), but overall the episode is another extremely enjoyable outing for the series. There are some very creepy moments, major developments in the overarching plot, the show's best action sequence to date and an Eva Green sex scene all wrapped up in one stylish bow - and if that balance is what Penny Dreadful is aiming to strike, I'm completely on board with that.
In celebration of the upcoming home media release of Denis Villeneuve's twisty thriller Enemy, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, we've got a very special giveaway for you today. One winner will receive not only a Blu-Ray copy of Enemy but also a poster for the film signed by Gyllenhaal himself.
As the deviously catchy song heavily featured through it would suggest, everything really is awesome in The LEGO Movie. Though it follows on the heels of horrific movies about classic toys like G.I. Joe and Transformers, this is the rare family flick that actually captures the unbridled joy that its source material still brings to millions of children every day, with jaw-dropping creativity, humor, style and intelligence. The LEGO Movie somehow succeeds on every level by being so many times better than it ever needed to be. Thank you, Phil Lord, Chris Miller and the hundreds of others who worked tirelessly to see this movie through - you've given us the most amazing family film in years.
Frozen River writer-director Courtney Hunt's sophomore feature, a courtroom drama titled The Whole Truth, was dealt an unexpected blow when star Daniel Craig abruptly dropped out just days before production was set to kick off. The film's producers were left scrambling to find a replacement - but that was back in April. When no replacement was named, many of us assumed that the project had been shelved, perhaps indefinitely. Now, however, Deadline is reporting that The Matrix star Keanu Reeves has taken over the role Craig was previously set to play.
