Warner Bros. has penciled in some new release dates, announcing new slots for a Project X sequel (oh-so-creatively titled Project XX), Ben Affleck drama The Accountant, Miles Teller starrer Arms & the Dudes and an untitled horror pic that's likely to be an Annabelle sequel.
2003's Bad Santa was one of the most unexpectedly hilarious yuletide treats to get unwrapped at the box office in all of cinematic history, but talk of a sequel has largely dissipated over the years, with Billy Bob Thornton most recently expressing skepticism about the project, which Entourage director Doug Ellin was supposed in line to direct. That was seven months back, but with Ellin's Entourage movie bowing in theaters this summer, the helmer is getting the discussion going again by revealing that his current plan is to shoot Bad Santa 2 this fall.
Though Child 44 was an absolute train-wreck, director Daniel Espinosa is moving forward, undaunted, with another period pic. This time, he's aiming high with an adaptation of Vilhelm Moberg's novel The Emigrants, last adapted in 1971 to the tune of four Oscar nominations. Maybe this will be the project that finally cements Espinosa, who broke out with Easy Money but followed it up with two major disappointments (generic thriller Safe House and Child 44, which was honestly less likable than a Soviet winter), as a noteworthy talent, though if The Emigrants is a success, Hollywood can't take credit - the helmer is setting this pic up overseas.
During his recent GQ cover story, Chris Pratt spilled the beans on a whole lot, from talk of him becoming the new Indiana Jones to Ghostbusters rumors. Less specifically but also excitingly, though, the Guardians of the Galaxy star discussed his future with Marvel, teasing that he's signed on for not only Guardians of the Galaxy 2 but a threequel and other Marvel films.
Fox is betting big on Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk this fall with the American Horror Story creators' campy horror-comedy Scream Queens, and now that the first full trailer for the anthology series has been released, it's easy to see why - seemingly every teen idol this side of Disney pops up in the preview.
Tomorrowland is an audacious, untidy work that wants us to be better and dream bigger. It's that rare summer blockbuster with something to say, and even if it stumbles over its words at times, we'd nonetheless be well advised to listen.
When Guardians of the Galaxy came out of nowhere to win the hearts and minds of millions last summer, it seemed suddenly that everyone in Hollywood wanted a piece of Chris Pratt. The actor was snapped up for this summer's Jurassic World, recruited for The Magnificent Seven and snagged for sci-fi romance Passengers. On the eve of his Jurassic debut, however, Pratt is setting the record straight on some other huge projects he's been rumored for - including Indiana Jones, Ghostbusters and Knight Rider reboots.
The title of The Lonely Island's feature-length comedy has been revealed, and it's suitably weird. Conner4Real will find the satirical musicians playing members of a broken-up boy band, who reunite when one member's (Andy Samberg) rap album is an embarrassing, possibly career-killing bomb. Today also brings word that Tim Meadows, another Saturday Night Live alum, has joined the cast.
EDM has been on the rise over the past few years, but Hollywood has largely failed to look inside the booming music subscene. That looks to be changing with this summer's We Are Your Friends, starring Zac Efron as an up-and-coming DJ searching for that one track to catapult him to the top of the charts. Along the way, he deals with growing distance from his friends, a blossoming romance with a beautiful girl (Emily Ratajkowski, of Gone Girl fame) and the pressures of working for a DJ veteran (Wes Bentley).
