Remember when everyone was pretty excited that G.I. Joe: Retaliation helmer Jon M. Chu (also known for Step Up) was tackling an adaptation of beloved '80s cartoon Jem and the Holograms? Well, sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but the first trailer for the musical drama has almost absolutely nothing to do with its source material, which has got to be a crushing blow for the fanbase that applauded development of this pic in the first place. It's another one of those deplorable 'in name only' adaptations.
Natalie Portman has been largely out of the spotlight since 2011's Thor: The Dark World, working on Western Jane Got a Gun, her directorial debut A Tale of Love and Darkness and Terrence Malick's Knight of Cups. Lately, though, the Black Swan Oscar winner has been making headlines by racking up lead roles in Alex Garland's Annihilation and Ruth Bader Ginsburg biopic On the Basis of Sex. Now, Portman has added another promising project to her schedule in French ghost story Planetarium.
A month ago, we learned that Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne (The Theory of Everything) was Warner Bros.' top choice to play adventuring hero Newt Scamander in Harry Potter prequel Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, but now it appears that the British thesp has begun official talks for the lead role.
The first season of HBO's The Leftovers was alternately miserable or mesmerizing, but it always gave us something to talk about last summer. By the time it ended its freshman run, though, the series was in a bit of a pickle, having exhausted all the material from co-showrunner Tom Perrotta's novel. As such, Damon Lindelof, The Leftovers' other driving creative force, teases that when the show returns, it will be drastically different than what viewers have already seen.
Though it's extremely commonplace in Hollywood for any successful film to birth a sequel, Alex Garland is much more interested in exploring new ideas than returning to old ones. As such, the Ex Machina writer-director has no plans to return to that sci-fi thriller's universe, and he also made a conscious decision not to write 28 Weeks Later, a sequel to he and Danny Boyle's genre-reinvigorating zombie thriller 28 Days Later.
DreamWorks has set Luke Greenfield, the director behind Let's Be Cops and The Girl Next Door, to direct a script he co-wrote with Dana Stevens (The Dive) called Destiny. The deal brings him under the wing of Steven Spielberg, the legendary helmer who encouraged a teenage Greenfield to pursue filmmaking way back in the '90s.
Strengthening its bond with Marvel, ABC has officially ordered a third season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and second season of Agent Carter, and though the former hasn't even aired its season 2 finale yet, new synopses from the network are teasing what's to come next season.
As if Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Blade Runner 2 and Indiana Jones 5 weren't enough, Warner Bros. is digging up another Harrison Ford classic, 1993's The Fugitive, for a new installment.
Despite a report last week that ABC and Marvel had shelved plans for an Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. spinoff that was to focus on Adrianne Palicki's Bobbi Morse/Mockingbird and Nick Blood's Lance Hunter, there's hope for the project yet.
NBC has revealed trailers for a few of its fall series, including Blindspot, People Are Talking, The Player and Heartbreaker - and the result is an expectedly mixed bag. My first impressions of the trailers, below:
