At long last, we've finally come to the big night in which The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will reveal the winners of The 89th Annual Academy Awards. By now, I'm sure you've gone through my predictions (if not, you can catch up on them right here), but the gist of it is that I'm expecting a very big night for Damien Chazelle's masterpiece musical La La Land (just like everyone else). In fact, I'm predicting it to take home no less than nine Oscars, though it could easily win more if a sweep occurs.
We’ve finally come to the big moment where I lay down my best predictions as to who will be taking home Academy Awards in all 24 categories. This year is a little different from last year in that it’s pretty much been a one-track award season for a certain little musical (as opposed to last year, where things were a little uncertain heading into the big night), but, as always, there’s plenty of room for surprises to happen, so let’s dive right in:
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has just finished announcing the winners of the 74th Annual Golden Globes, which resulted in Damien Chazelle's magnificent musical La La Land sweeping all seven of its categories: Best Picture (Comedy/Musical), Best Director (Chazelle), Best Actor (Comedy/Musical) (Ryan Gosling), Best Actress (Comedy/Musical) (Emma Stone), Best Screenplay (Chazelle), Best Original Score (Justin Hurwitz), and Best Original Song ("City of Stars"). With these seven wins, the film has set a new record for most Golden Globes won by a movie.
Tonight will see the Television Academy handing out the major awards for the 68th Annual Primetime Emmys. We already saw Game of Thrones dominate at last week's Creative Emmys with a whopping nine wins, so it should come as no surprise that it's the clear favorite to win several more this evening.
A moment of silence please for the worst night in Academy Awards history in the past decade.
Now that that's out of the way, let's sift through the ashes of what turned out to be a rather disastrous night, starting with the fact that the instantly-forgettable Spotlight has claimed the top prize. The film only managed to nab one additional Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, making it the weakest Best Picture win in over 60 years (the last Best Picture winner to take only one additional Oscar was The Greatest Show on Earth, which, fittingly, is commonly named as one of the worst picks in Academy history).
The 88th Annual Academy Awards are just around the corner, so once again, it’s time to lay down my predictions for who has the best chance of winning in each of the 24 categories, along with a bit of analysis as to why they appear to be the frontrunners.
The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) ave just finished presenting their awards, with the results being pretty much as predicted: The Revenant has won five awards, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Cinematography, and Best Sound. Mad Max: Fury Road was not far behind with four wins of its own, including Best Editing, Best Production Design, Best Make Up & Hair, and Best Costume Design.
The 68th Annual Writers Guild of America Awards have just concluded with disappointing, though not surprising, results: Spotlight has claimed their award for Original Screenplay, while The Big Short has won Adapted Screenplay (note that there's no "best" in front of these categories due to their silly rules which excluded several of the top nominees).
The 68th annual Directors Guild of America Awards have just concluded with Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu winning the guild's top prize for his brilliant work on The Revenant, officially making him the new frontrunner for the Best Director Oscar at this year's Academy Awards (the winner here goes on to win the Oscar about 90% of the time).
The 22nd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards have just concluded, with Spotlight taking top honors (Best Cast of a Motion Picture) as most predicted. In fact, almost everything in the film categories went exactly as predicted, with Leonardo DiCaprio earning his well-deserved Best Actor award for The Revenant and Brie Larson picking up Best Actress for her outstanding work in Room.
