Tom McCarthy is a writer/director that, sadly, most people have probably never heard of. After starting his career as an actor, he took a chance by writing and directing The Station Agent, which won him lots of critical acclaim. A few years later, he wowed critics again with The Visitor, a film about a very unusual relationship. Now, McCarthy returns with his next touching story in Win Win.
The writing team behind the great thriller Taken brings us another out-for-revenge film with their latest collaboration, Colombiana. It’s being marketed as a non-stop action-thriller with a main character not letting anyone get in here way as she tries to complete her mission, and while that is what we get in part, it’s certainly not the whole film. In fact, it’s a very small part of the film, so if you were expecting a film in the same range as Taken, you may want to put those expectations aside as you’re not exactly going to get what’s being advertised.
If last week’s Friends With Benefits was any indication, it seems like writers are unwilling to change up the same old tiresome romantic-comedy formula. However, this week brings the release of Crazy, Stupid, Love, a film that only follows parts of the age-old formula and instead approaches it with a different tone. Whereas most romantic-comedies will have a light, playful tone throughout most of the film proceeded by a sadder tone while we wait for the characters to get together, the way this film goes about it presents a sadder mood right from the start.
It’s been coming for ten years, but now at last it’s here, the final adventure of Harry Potter. We’ve seen Harry, Ron, and Hermione go through quite a bit since their first days at Hogwarts, from all the good times they’ve had hanging out together to the darker, more tragic side of their adventures. Now it all comes to an end as the final battle between Harry and Voldemort draws closer with several lives hanging in the balance.
The Playlist is reporting that Abigail Spencer, who has appeared in such shows as Mad Men and Hawthorne, as well as the upcoming film Cowboys & Aliens, has been cast in Sam Raimi's Oz: The Great and Powerful.
After getting reports of both Michael Bay and Shia LaBeouf saying that they are done with their extremely lucrative franchise, it left people wondering if there would be anymore Transformers in the future. Today we have word from producer Don Murphy regarding the future of the franchise:
Seth Gordon’s Horrible Bosses is another one of those comedies that came out of nowhere and ended up being quite surprising thanks to the recent tradition of misleading trailers. The trailer for the film was only somewhat promising, not really showing much in the way of comedy and not raising my expectations a whole lot.
From acclaimed Japanese director Takashi Miike comes the marvelously-constructed period piece 13 Assassins. You may know Miike from his other, stranger films such as Audition or Ichi the Killer, but here, he leaves that all behind to completely switch genres for a samurai action film.
We've been hearing an awful lot lately about Quentin Tarantino's upcoming Spaghetti Western Django Unchained. Recently we got the news that Tarantino personally chose Oscar-winner Jamie Foxx to play the lead role of Django, with other recent news including Leonardo DiCaprio joining as the villain Calvin Candie.
