If you attended Dreamstate this weekend, then you know you witnessed trance history in the making. The hard part will be explaining that to anyone who wasn’t there to see it for themselves.
It's hard to hate on bass house - especially when the track in question brings something new to the table. Chocolate Puma have secured their spot as one of the leading purveyors of the up-and-coming genre, and their latest track, "Popatron," makes for an inspired contribution to their growing legacy.
It doesn't feel like all that long ago that Nicky Romero wrote a heartfelt letter to his fans explaining why his releases been so few and far between this year, but the DJ/producer and Protocol Recordings founder has already turned around and delivered a brand new collaboration with Hungarian duo StadiumX. "Harmony" will come out on Romero's label in a few weeks, but in the meantime, he's uploaded a teaser to his SoundCloud account.
A DJ/producer who wears a mask onstage remixing an Adele song sounds like too ridiculous of an EDM cliche to be true, but it's actually a thing and it's actually halfway decent. Anonymous EDM artist Marshmello has turned out something of a mixed bag of originals, but I can admit that his remix of Adele's "Hello" is among the better work he's turned out.
It's been nearly a year since the 2015 sailing of Groove Cruise departed from the port of Miami to showcase performances from the likes of Oliver Heldens, Darude and Will Sparks, and the cruise festival's organizers have now released its official aftermovie. Set to "Never Leave" by DVBBS, the video closely follows behind a handful of the cruise's passengers, giving us a look at what went down aboard the ship.
If you feel like it's strange to hear a Chet Faker song with a four-four house beat, well, that's because it is - but in the case of "Birthday Card," you can probably go ahead and attribute that part of the production to Marcus Marr. The two electronic music artists must have left off with some unfinished business after last month's "The Trouble With Us" because it took them no time at all to follow up on it.
We may only be through one night of DreamState, but it's already safe to assert that this festival will become a mecca of sorts for the trance community of North America. Insomniac Events more than delivered on their promise of organizing a massive that would cater more to long-time fans of the genre as evidenced by the overwhelmingly positive response from last night's festivities, and tonight looks to be even more stacked with world-class purveyors of psytrance, tech trance, Goa trance and traditional or "pure" trance.
There's a very simple reason why Steve Angello's Wild Youth will be remembered as one of the strongest albums of 2015: It doesn't sound like anything else on the market right now.
As it stands, if you want to divide a room by old dance music fans and new dance music fans, all you need to do is mention Underworld and see how many people know who you're talking about. That might all change in 2016, though, because the British trio have announced their first album in over five years in the form of Barbara Barbara, we face a shining future.
A major chapter in the history of electronic music is about to come to a close, as superclub Pacha New York has announced that it will close its doors beginning in January. The celebrated offshoot of Pacha Ibiza has acted as a platform by which electronic music artists and promoters could reach an ever-expanding fanbase over the past decade that its doors have been open to the public, but all of that will end after its 10 Year Anniversary party on December 12th.
