Jordan Adler is a film buff who consumes so much popcorn, he expects that a coroner's report will one day confirm that butter runs through his veins. Box Office Report: No Good Deed Goes Unpunished At #1
Producer Will Packer is having a great year. Four of his low-budget releases in 2014, all of which have a predominantly African-American featured cast, have opened to more than $20 million. His latest triumph is the home invasion thriller No Good Deed, which debuted to $24.5 million - almost twice its production cost of $13 million. (The other three titles are Ride Along, About Last Night... and Think Like a Man Too.) That opening was beyond industry expectations; however, with 60% of the crowd being females and few estrogen-leaning titles out in late summer, the big opening should not be much of a surprise.

The Drop Review [TIFF 2014]
The Drop, which Lehane adapts to the screen from his short story Animal Rescue, is a different beast. It is a drama so low-key and plodding in comparison to his other works, that it is hard to understand why he chose to translate this minor tale in the first place.

Samba Review [TIFF 2014]
Samba, the new film from The Intouchables directors Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano, uses the appeal of its lead star, Omar Sy, to generate crowd-pleasing moments in what is likely the cheeriest movie ever made about the immigrant’s plight. Despite its light touch, the levity works.

Wet Bum Review [TIFF 2014]
Writer/director Lindsay MacKay has made a variety of shorts focused on youths; now, for her feature debut, Wet Bum, she homes in on both the delicate beauty and the danger associated with growing up. In the Canadian coming-of-age drama, Julia Sarah Stone gives a performance of tremendous depth, spark and dramatic range.

The Connection Review [TIFF 2014]
Cédric Jimenez’s stylish but formulaic true-crime thriller The Connection makes its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival this week. The title refers to the infamous “French Connection” heroin ring. Seasoned moviegoers and fans of 1970s cinema know that name from the Oscar-winning thriller with Gene Hackman as Jimmy "Popeye" Doyle. Well, that New York-set film showed the American angle to what was one of the world’s most dangerous drug smuggling syndicates, one actually based in Marseilles.
