Texas Rising Review

However, Texas Rising is a glorious missed opportunity. Instead of telling a taut collection of fascinating stories from the many sides engaged in ruthless battle, the mini-series is mostly content to wander with the flatly drawn white male saviors.

Southern Rites Review

Southern Rites, which premieres May 18 on HBO, is a timely documentary. If it had been released on any May 18 in the cable network’s history, it would have been just as timely. Director/photographer Gillian Laub’s film explores the entrenched racism that is still present in some American communities, and the continued double standards of a legal system that so firmly marginalizes African-Americans.

Every Secret Thing Review

Every Secret Thing should be a fine drama, well acted and smartly directed, yet its merits seem to matter less when the central mystery is so pedestrian. The last third of the film – when the answers are unloaded – is cluttered with exposition and some story conveniences that may have worked better if we knew more about the characters.

Maysles spends a few minutes with Apfel as she flips through photo albums, recollecting her time as an interior designer. However, just as she cuts off her husband when he tries to extol her virtues, Maysles trims pertinent parts of her life that helped to form this still rambunctious, red carpet ready icon. Apfel is a fascinating subject for one of a great filmmaker’s last efforts, but the film could have been more singular and insightful.

Mad Men Review: “The Milk And Honey Route” (Season 7, Episode 13)

This final season of Mad Men has not as much been a series of exclamation marks as periods. There is not just a sense of finality to many of the subplots, but many of the characters have come to a realization and admitted the truth, granting them a form of catharsis. Peggy spoke to Stan about the baby she had a decade earlier. Joan confronted the pervasive industry sexism. In “The Milk and Honey Route,” the series’ penultimate hour, two more declarative sentences close, with Pete and Betty. As for Don, he is sitting at a bus stop in the middle of Oklahoma. Although he has found a sort of catharsis, his final destination is still question mark.

Box Office Report: Avengers Still Mammoth Over Mother’s Day Weekend

Although it’s not drawing the massive crowds its predecessor did, Avengers: Age of Ultron is still putting up very big numbers. The 3D superhero sequel added another $77.2 million to its gross, a 60% drop from its muscular opening last weekend. Despite a hefty drop, that is the second-best second weekend in history.

Freeman and Keaton star as Alex and Ruth Carver, a charming couple with mixed feelings about selling their quaint Brooklyn apartment – one that overlooks the bridge, has a garden on the roof and plenty of sunlight coming through the windows. They have lived at this picturesque location for 40 years, but now that Ruth has retired from teaching and Alex huffs to get up the five flights leading to the door, they hope to find a new place.
