Clouds Of Sils Maria Review
Clouds of Sils Maria tries to be a serious film about an aging actor reflecting on her life and career, as she prepares to give away the part that was her breakthrough role 20 years ago to a hot teen celebrity. However, its commentary about Hollywood is not very sophisticated and the parallels between fiction and reality so obvious that little of them are clever. As Valentine would insist, Assayas’ latest drama is not a very deep movie underneath its art-house clothing.

Louie Season 5 Review
Where season four was audacious, season five – returning for a shorter, eight episode block in April and May – looks more like the FX comedy in its early run. The tuneful title sequence is back, as is the elliptical storytelling. Despite its more modest goals, the comedy remains pointed and potent. The pain that permeated through the last two seasons, as Louie dealt with the struggles of raising teen girls and dating a collection of volatile women, is still there. But instead of sprawling outward in scope, C.K. moves inward, keeping the stories moving nimbly while focusing on matters like the generational gap and the protagonist’s continued disconnect to the people in his life.

Better Call Saul Season Finale Review: “Marco” (Season 1, Episode 10)
“Marco” is one of the best hours of television that has ever aired on AMC – and given the quality drama the network is often synonymous with, that’s a sterling compliment. The not-so-hidden secret to the episode, and much of the series thus far, has been Bob Odenkirk. Giving Jimmy McGill the droll hilarity of a huckster and the deep-set vulnerability of a damaged soul trying to start again only works with an actor with the ability to bring out both of those elements.

First Reactions To Pixar’s Inside Out
The animated comedy, opening in North America on June 19, tells the story of Riley (voiced by Kaitlyn Dias), an adolescent girl moving to San Francisco and trying to adjust to a new life. However, much of the film is not seen through Riley’s eyes; rather, most of it takes place in her mind, as five central emotions guide the young girl. Amy Poehler leads the voice cast as Joy, the bubbly ringleader in the emotion-based headquarters. Joining Poehler is Lewis Black as Anger, Bill Hader as Fear, Mindy Kaling as Disgust and Phyllis Smith as Sadness.

Mad Men Review: “Severance” (Season 7, Episode 8)
Perhaps it is appropriate that, with just six more episodes left, Mad Men is bringing up relics, past flames and old jobs. Bert Cooper’s sign-off – one that apparently happened nine months prior to when this episode is set – was for Don to remember that “the best things in life are free.” Self-worth is a major theme of “Severance,” with many of the characters trying to figure out what they really want. (Although what many of the show’s fans may really want is for Roger and Ted to get a good shave.)

Box Office Report: Furious 7 Speeds To April Record
It was full speed ahead for Furious 7, which obliterated the April record at the North American box office with one of the biggest debuts of all time. The sixth sequel to The Fast and the Furious opened to an eye-popping $143.6 million, the ninth largest opening in domestic box office history. That was about 50% higher than Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which earned $95 million to take the monthly record on this weekend last year.

Sinatra: All Or Nothing At All Review
With Sinatra: All or Nothing At All, Alex Gibney attempts to do both, aiming for specificity and sprawl, and the results do not always work. Frank Sinatra is certainly a captivating performer with a long and varied career. However, as an artist whose life and times are so well encompassed in other films and books, was a two-part HBO doc north of four hours really necessary? Gibney prefers a straightforward biography when a more insightful study on “Ol’ Blue Eyes” would have been more potent.

Mad Men’s 10 Best Episodes
This Sunday, the second half of the final season of Mad Men will premiere on AMC. For the characters that have roamed the hallways of Sterling Cooper (and that agency’s descendants) or have had a connection to someone in its offices, the end of the season will mark the conclusion of one glorious decade, the 1960s. For the loyal band of viewers that has stayed with the series for eight years, its final seven hours mark the end of another era, that of fine primetime television.

Boychoir Review
However, despite a continued reliance on conventional story beats, Boychoir often manages to hit its high dramatic notes with vigor and grace. Stet’s journey from a misunderstood, misanthropic pre-teen to a prized pupil at the National Boychoir doesn’t surprise, but it does satisfy. The character arc engages due to terrific performances and elegantly staged musical sequences, the latter a noted feature of Canadian director François Girard.
