Modern Family Season Premiere Review: “Suddenly, Last Summer” And “First Days” (Season 5, Episodes 1 and 2)
After picking up four straight Best Comedy Emmys, ballooning the paycheques for its adult ensemble and getting a big syndication deal, Modern Family could have coasted for the rest of its run with merely competent episodes. But the beloved sitcom, which descended from two very strong debut seasons to a very good, but inconsistent collection of episodes for the last two years, proved why it’s still regarded by the television academy as the finest comedy out there with two excellent season openers Wednesday night.

Derek Cianfrance Will Direct ESPN: Those Guys Have All the Fun
Writer/director Derek Cianfrance is one of Hollywood's hottest indie filmmakers. His latest film, The Place Beyond the Pines, became a solid hit for Focus Features this spring. Now, the studio wants to keep a hold on the filmmaker (whose credits also include the Oscar-nominated drama Blue Valentine) and signed him today to direct an adaptation of ESPN: Those Guys Have All the Fun, which chronicles the formation of the sports network and television empire.

Adam Sandler May Play An Actual Grown Up In The Cobbler
Among the list of A-list comics who occasionally turn to dramas, Adam Sandler is not quite up there with the likes of Robin Williams and Jim Carrey. Those actors arguably did finer jobs with serious roles than they did mugging for the camera (watch Good Will Hunting and The Truman Show for proof). But Adam Sandler has done terrific work as the dramatic anchor of Spanglish and Reign Over Me. Plus, his quixotic change of pace in Paul Thomas Anderson's Punch-Drunk Love is a career highlight.

Bruce Dern Wants To Be A Millionaire In First Nebraska Trailer
Alexander Payne's comedy-drama Nebraska is far from the sunny Hawaiian shores that set his last picture, the Oscar-winning The Descendants. The film's trailer brings to mind the American independent cinema during the 1980s, especially the films of Wim Wenders and Jim Jarmusch, with their aimless protagonists and contemplative views of American life. The director is moving further away from big-name stars and the broad comedy that populated The Descendants. There is a low-key approach here, with stark black-and-white photography and an ensemble of character actors.
