After an unprecedented theatrical run, which saw the titular supergroup conquer the elusive $2 billion plateau, even though they couldn’t overthrow the Mad Titan, Avengers: Infinity War will be making the intergalactic journey to home video next month - digitally next Tuesday if you’re incapable of waiting - and Thanos will not be arriving alone.
Despite coming off an insanely strong showing at San Diego Comic-Con, in which the comic book juggernaut delighted the crowd with the first teaser for Shazam!, shared some unpolished Wonder Woman 1984 footage, and finally unleashed the first Aquaman trailer, DC has no interest in taking a breather. And seeing as the WB subsidiary is finally able to bask in the spotlight, rather than flee from it, that’s saying a lot.
John Krasinski has done a helluva job rebranding himself this year. Typecast as the strong silent type, he gave new meaning to the label, quite literally, in his box office smash A Quiet Place. However, the future wasn’t always as bright as where the actor can be presently found - namely, in the upper pantheon of coveted talent.
If you’re looking for an example of how fickle a fanbase can be, look no further than Star Wars: The Last Jedi. The second installment in the Sequel Trilogy hauled in $1.3 billion globally during a 126-day theatrical run - good enough for eleventh on the all-time worldwide gross chart - and earned an admirable 91% certified fresh rating on the Tomatometer.
From Stephen Hawking to Stephen Strange, Benedict Cumberbatch can truly do it all. Awarded his first Oscar nomination in 2015 for his portrayal of Alan Turing in The Imitation Game, Cumberbatch is not only a masterful thespian but a magician at motion capture (see The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, Mowgli), as well.
The third instalment into Legendary Entertainment's MonsterVerse put the entire world on notice when it unleashed the electrifying first trailer - seen above - and an equally jaw-dropping poster. Unfortunately, both had to be used in order to counteract Dougherty’s comment from earlier in the month, in which the director stated Godzilla: King of the Monsters won’t do much to set up the title fight of unimaginable magnitude when Gojira goes toe-to-toe with the Giant Gorilla in Godzilla Vs. Kong.
Not that long ago, it was Tom Holland hogging the San Diego Comic-Con spotlight. This year, however, with the English actor in his native land filming Spider-Man: Far From Home, his symbiotic counterpart, Venom, was the one working Hall H into a frenzy; although, it’s not like the web-slinger had much of a say in the matter. That said, Tom Hardy did have a choice word, or two, for the portrayer of the titular web-head.
Along with Wonder Woman 1984, Ruben Fleischer’s Venom is one of the few San Diego Comic-Con participants who didn't make what was screened within the confines of Hall H immediately available for public consumption. Which, considering the footage shown, is quite unfortunate, as it saw the sinister symbiote literally bite the head off of an insignificant baddie.
During their allotted time at San Diego Comic-Con, WB and DC delighted the crowd with the first teaser for Shazam!, shared some unpolished Wonder Woman 1984 footage, and made the big splash everyone had been waiting for; in the form of the first trailer for Aquaman, all whilst managing to rebrand their entire operation in the process.
San Diego Comic-Con 2018 is drawing to a close, and as a result, the barrage of content being dolled out is also winding down, unfortunately. However, the show must go on, and although the frequency in which minutia is being announced has slowed considerably, there’s still some pretty significant news coming out of the “largest convention of its kind in the world.”
