Despite the array of talent involved in the pilot, the FX network has decided to pass on Hoke. The TV drama starred Paul Giamatti as Hoke Moseley and was set in Miami during the early-1980s. The pilot was written and directed by veteran screenwriter Scott Frank.
Once the dust completely settles on the first half of the summer blockbuster movie season, you may be surprised to learn that the highest grossing superhero movie thus far was actually released in April. That's right, after all the hype that surrounded The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and X-Men: Days Of Future Past, both of these films are currently struggling to cross the $200 million mark in the US. Meanwhile, Captain America: The Winter Soldier has not only grossed more than $250 million domestically, but it's also the highest grossing movie of the year worldwide ($700 million). And while The Amazing Spider-Man 2 may soon overtake Captain America in the latter category, this point remains: no other franchise can compete with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. At least, not this year.
Well, this is certainly disappointing. Jupiter Ascending, the next big sci-fi epic from Andy and Lana Wachowski, has had its release date pushed back to February 6th, 2015. This news comes as quite a surprise considering its initial release date of July 18th is only seven weeks away, but apparently the Wachowskis are not yet finished with the movie's extensive special effects.
Guillermo del Toro is not a very prolific director, but he sure does like getting himself involved in an abundance of projects as a producer. He's taken on the role of executive producer on such films as Puss In Boots, Rise Of The Guardians and last year's Mama. This summer, we'll see Del Toro take on television for the first time with The Strain, a show he co-created, which is set to air on FX. But his latest producing effort, The Book Of Life, seems to hit closer to home than any of those other efforts. This 3D computer-animated feature is very clearly influenced by the Mexican holiday The Day of the Dead, and if this trailer is any indication, we should be in for a real visual treat.
The Silence Of The Lambs director Jonathan Demme has helmed a number of different documentaries and TV shows over the last little while, but believe it or not, he hasn't made a feature film in six years. Of course, that's not for lack of trying. He's attached himself to various projects here and there, but nothing substantial seemed to have come out of any of them. At least, until now.
Mood Indigo is set to hit theaters stateside on July 18th and if this trailer is any indication, it may very well be the most fun film Gondry has made in years. It stars Audrey Tautou (Amelie) and Romain Duris (The Beat My Heart Skipped) as Chloe and Colin, respectively, two young people who meet and soon fall in love. Shortly after they get married, however, Chloe develops an illness that only deteriorates over time. According to the official plot description, her illness is caused by a flower growing in her lungs. So yeah, it's that kind of movie.
Allow me to preface this article by reminding you that it has been nine years since Sin City came out. Nine years. Do you realize how long ago that was? Robert Rodriguez has made two Machete films and a fourth Spy Kids movie since then, which has left fans wondering... what in the world is taking so long with Sin City: A Dame To Kill For?
It's impossible to talk about a new movie starring Philip Seymour Hoffman without taking a moment to mourn the loss of this fantastic actor. Hoffman died at the young age of 46 earlier this year, and all we have left are the wonderful performances he has given us over the course of his career. Thankfully, we can still see him in a handful of movies that are releasing over the next couple of months, with God's Pocket being one of them.
Woody Allen may be pushing 80, but old age hasn't stopped him from making movies at a breakneck pace. The man has directed at least one film per year for almost four decades now, and he doesn't seem to be slowing down anytime soon. His latest effort, Magic In The Moonlight, is a comedy set during the 1920s in the south of France. Like with most of Allen's films, it boasts an impressive ensemble cast that features the likes of Emma Stone, Colin Firth, Marcia Gay Harden, Hamish Linklater and Jacki Weaver.
Is there anyone having a better year than Disney and Marvel right now? As a matter of fact, it seems that both studios have been riding high ever since The Avengers became a mega-success just two years ago. And while Marvel has become the envy of all other studios who have comic book franchises, Disney Animation have been no slouch either.
