Are you excited for Star Trek Beyond yet? The film has managed to fight back against some raised eyebrows from stalwart George Takei over Sulu's sexuality, leaked trailers that proved unimpressive, and the critical furore surrounding Ghostbusters that drew attention away from the latest in the franchise reboot series. Now, with just about a week to go before Star Trek Beyond hits theaters, we have a few more TV spots to whet your appetite.
The Emmy nods have hit the Internet, and there are a few surprises among these stellar examples of Primetime TV. Game of Thrones leads the pack with a whopping 23 nominations, which probably will not surprise anyone who has tuned in to the show this season. It's certainly one of the better programs on TV right now, and this season has been particularly stellar.
Hollywood history is full of what-ifs. What if Tom Selleck had played Indiana Jones? What if Edgar Wright got to direct Ant-Man (that one still stings)? What if Steven Soderbergh directed a James Bond film? That last one comes to us courtesy of a Q&A at Nitehawk Cinema, following a screening of Haywire, when Soderbergh revealed that he had been approached to direct a James Bond movie more than once, but it never got off the ground. Here's what Soderbergh had to say:
A Horror Renaissance is upon us, with a rise in unique and deceptively simple stories told with surprising depth and straightforward scares. This is the case with writer/director Jeremy Saulnier’s Green Room, which hacks its way onto Blu-ray this week.
The Coen Brothers’ lyrical homage to Classic Hollywood Hail, Caesar! hits Blu-ray this week. A more optimistic companion piece to the darker, seamier Hollywood of Barton Fink, Hail, Caesar! succeeds more than it fails, delivering an enjoyable and diverting, if somewhat unfocused, paean to a bygone world.
Oddly enough, Alex Proyas's Gods of Egypt is not a bad idea on paper. There have been plenty of weird, kitschy films about Greek gods and Roman gods, as well as Judeo-Christian stories, but the well of Egyptian deities has (in Western film at least) been left largely untapped. That’s unfortunate, because the Egyptians have a rich and complex mythology. Which is why it’s such a shame that Gods of Egypt, hitting Blu-ray this week, fails as massively – indeed, epically – as it does.
About a year ago, an unfinished trailer for the upcoming Star Trek Beyond was leaked online and provoked a bit of a backlash from fans and former Star Trek cast members alike. Apparently this did not sit well either with co-writer Simon Pegg or director Justin Lin, as both men told Wired earlier.
Remember when everyone was really excited about Arrested Development resurrecting itself on Netflix? And remember how no one could agree if it was good, bad, or just terribly mediocre when the season did come out? Well, if series creator Mitch Hurwitz has his way, another season of Arrested Development might very well become a reality.
The CW has been building quite a lineup over the years. Its recent acquisition of Supergirl means that its becoming a go-to spot for superhero shows, but it also keeps sight of its teenage and older demographic. To that end, CW has finally released a plot synopsis and first image for its series Riverdale, featuring beloved Archie Comics characters in a slightly darker scenario than the bubblegum stuff we usually think of when we think "Archie Andrews."
