Ryan Gosling isn't foreign to the cinematic press junket scene, but when I talked to the auteur at this year's South by Southwest festival in Austin, the role he was discussing wasn't his usual one. The upcoming film Lost River has Gosling's name attached, but not as the star. That would be actor Iain De Caestecker, or actress Saoirse Ronan, or any of the other cast members who traverse the film's watery wasteland. Instead, Gosling logged credits as the film's writer and director, marking two firsts for the budding triple-threat. He's already proven he can act, and through his new film, he also proves that he can string together an artistically-driven experience that's lively, off-beat, and tragic in the most fairy-tale of ways.

Todd Strauss-Schulson's The Final Girls is easily South by Southwest's brightest hidden gem, after playing to a packed house of howling movie lovers during the festival's opening night. My full review of the film sums up my feelings pretty well on Strauss-Schulson's trippy homage/spoof/horror comedy, but let me stress again how much of a treat this film is for horror fans. For those of you who dream about being in a horror movie, this is the closest you're ever going to get.

After breaking onto the indie scene with her film Girlfight (which also put Michelle Rodriguez on the map), filmmaker Karyn Kusama found herself directing two big-budget films in Aeon Flux and Jennifer's Body. But the latter was released about 6 years ago, and since her horrific team-up with Megan Fox, she decided to remain out of the cinematic circuit - until now. At this year's South by Southwest festival, Karyn premiered her new thriller, The Invitation, which is a tense return to her indie filmmaking roots.

You probably remember Henry Rollins from his punk-rock days with Black Flag, or as an out-spoken human activist, but filmmaker Jason Krawczyk has a different vision of Rollins as a troubled, undead, possibly vampiric - well, I'm still not entirely sure WHAT he is. In the movie He Never Died, Rollins plays a man who just can't seem to die no matter what torture he endures. Is he a hero? A villain? If it's up to Rollins' character Jack, he'd be neither. He'd just sit around all day watching television, visiting a local diner, and drinking blood to quell a dark secret swept safely under a rug of normality.

Yes. It's true. I got to attend the South by Southwest film festival and see some AWESOME movies, and I got to talk to some ever more AWESOME-ER people, but, my most AWESOMEST experience came from seeing The Final Girls - a horror comedy homage riddled with metaphysical goodies and 80s slasher references. It's a horror lover's dream movie, filled with laughs, hunky dudes, and some seriously strong women who pay their respect to the original "Final Girls" who have battled horror villains for years.
