It is surely the case that the most effective trailer is one that shows us very little, but fully prepares us for what we are about to experience. In that sense, the new trailer for upcoming Netflix series Mindhunter is very effective indeed. It provides only the briefest of glimpses of footage between long shots of a growing, blood-red ink blot, while chilling dialogue clips tease our ears. This promotional snippet leaves us in no doubt whatsoever – this thing is going to get very dark, very quickly.

The idea of secret societies just lends itself to thrilling cinema, doesn’t it? Clandestine gatherings in concealed locations, covert motivations for underground activities, betrayal and treachery lurking behind every shadowy corner – it is all fertile ground for compelling storytelling.
