The "Free Britney" saga continues.

Britney Spears ex-husband, Sam Asghari, appeared on Piers Morgan and weighed in on the singer’s recent arrest on suspicion of DUI.

Spears and Asghari, an Iranian-American model, fitness trainer, and actor, began dating in 2016 and married in 2022. They divorced in 2024.

Asghari told Morgan,

In a way, not comparing the situation whatsoever, she was also oppressed by many people that took advantage of her and sort of had the same experiences women do in Iran.”

Asghari, 32, went on to say he admires his former spouse, and said, “Coming from the country of Iran and seeing women being oppressed, that’s something that stuck out to me and was a value I carried my whole entire life,” and, referring to Spears recent arrest, said, “everybody makes mistakes.”

Spears’ former assistant: “People out to get her.”

Meanwhile, Spears’ former assistant and longtime friend, Sean Phillip, spoke to Extra about the singer’s arrest.

Phillip said,

I think there are some people out to get her. And the timing is so off that she gets financial independence, and then she’s arrested.”

Phillip added, “We all think it’s a push to put her back in a conservatorship — guess what happened when the conservatorship stopped? People stopped getting money.”

Spears’ conservatorship was a legal arrangement that began in 2008 after a series of highly publicized personal struggles. Under this arrangement, her father, Jamie Spears, and a team of lawyers and financial managers controlled her personal, medical, and financial decisions, including her career and finances.

Over the years, Spears publicly expressed frustration, claiming the conservatorship was overly restrictive and abusive, as the #FreeBritney movement gained widespread support from fans and celebrities.

After a series of court battles, media coverage, and testimony from Spears herself, the conservatorship was terminated in November 2021, restoring her full legal autonomy and control over her personal and financial affairs.

Still, Philllip continued, “I don’t think she’s free. There’s still a care plan in place. I personally don’t think she has access to all her finances, but a lot of other people do, and I don’t think it’s fair.”

What happened to Britney Spears?

In early March 2026, Spears was arrested in Ventura County, California, on suspicion of driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol and drugs after officers reported her vehicle being driven erratically on the U.S.‑101 freeway. She was stopped by the California Highway Patrol, submitted to field sobriety tests, and was booked at the Ventura County jail before being released early the next morning. Authorities are still awaiting chemical test results, and no mugshot is being publicly released under local policy.

Spears’ representatives called the incident “completely inexcusable” and said she plans to comply with legal requirements while seeking support from loved ones. Spears is scheduled to appear in court on May 4, 2026, regarding the DUI charge, and the case is ongoing
