Cary Elwes and Christopher Lloyd to star in ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ spinoff ‘Knuckles’

The show's got some heavy hitters.

The upcoming Sonic The Hedgehog spinoff series Knuckles just added two Hollywood heavyweights to the cast. Cary Elwes (Saw, The Princess Bride), and Christopher Lloyd (Back to the Future) will be joining the series, which takes place after Sonic the Hedgehog 2 but before its sequel Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

Joining those two actors are Stockard Channing (Grease), Paul Scheer (The League) and Rob Huebel (The House). Idris Elba is back as the main character, and Adam Pally will also reprise his role as Wade Whipple, per Deadline. We’ve yet to see any character designs for the show, but seeing as it’s the same team that completely redid Sonic’s look after the first movie, they’ll probably be fine.

The plot involves Knuckles agreeing to mentor and train Wade so he can learns the way of the Knuckle sandwich, or something like that. If Knuckles doesn’t either have a move called that or make an actual sandwich in the show, that’s a real missed opportunity. Anyway. the Sonic 2 writer John Whittington also wrote the pilot for the show and will act as head writer on the production.

Jeff Fowler, who directed the first two films, will direct the pilot and serve as an executive producer on the rest of the series. The Knuckles character debuted in the video game Sonic the Hedgehog 3 from 1994. Later that year, he got a more marquee position in the game Sonic & Knuckles.

When asked about his approach to playing Knuckles, Fowler said Elba wanted to be “the best version of the character. Which was awesome. It was great to see how much he cared about getting it right.” As for the performance itself, Fowler said Elba “absolutely nailed it.”

There’s no concrete date for the premiere of the show, but we’ll keep you posted.
