Dick Van Dyke escapes with ‘minor injuries’ after Malibu car crash

Law enforcement officials were called and they confirmed that the legendary actor Dick Van Dyke was involved in a collision. However, he only sustained “minor injuries” and appears to be okay.

Just last month, Dick Van Dyke was revealed as the “Gnome” on the 9th season premiere of The Masked Singer. At 97 years old, he became the oldest singer to ever perform on the show. It would seem he’s alive and well, still kicking it in entertainment.

That almost came to an end last week when he was involved in a single-car collision that involved a gate. CNN reached out to a spokesperson for the City of Malibu Police Department who reported that when police arrived on the scene, Dyke’s silver Lexus had in fact collided into a gate. He was pulled from the wreckage bleeding from the nose and the mouth as TMZ reports.

He was immediately looked at by paramedics but refused to be taken to a local hospital for further treatment. He told police he had lost control of the car when it went into a slide on the wet surface of the road. L.A. had been experiencing consistent rain, making road conditions a little dangerous for drivers.

This isn’t the first time he’s made headlines for being involved in an incident involving a car. In 2013, USA Today reports his Jaguar caught on fire while he was in it. He had to be pulled out by a passerby but also suffered only minor injuries in that incident. He remained loyal to the company — even though his sports car literally went up in smoke. He bought himself a new one and installed a fire extinguisher.

The iconic actor’s career spans back seven decades when he was cast for a role in two episodes of The Phil Silvers Show in 1957. He went on to star in Bye Bye Birdie, Mary Poppins, and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang before landing his own television show by his name. The Dick Van Dyke Show lasted 158 episodes from 1961 to 1966 and then was rebranded as The New Dick Van Dyke Show, which lasted 72 episodes from 1971 to 1974. In recent years, he’s appeared as Dr. Townshend in Scrubs (2003), Cecil in Night at the Museum (2006), again in Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb (2014), and the reprise of Mary Poppins Returns (2018).

Married since 2012 to Arlene Silver, a 40-year-old makeup artist at the time, he appears to be living his best life as they share a home in Malibu. He just needs to stay safe on the road to keep cruising way past his twilight years.
