Diddy’s acquittal loses its taste of victory as lawyers fail to prove he is no longer a ‘danger’

The results of Sean “Diddy” Combs’ trial are in and all things considered the rapper may have gotten off relatively lightly. But that doesn’t necessarily equate to a victory for his legal team as the judge presiding over the case has stated that Combs will not be released on bail prior to his sentencing.

The now notorious musician was acquitted of the most damning charges but will still be sentenced on two lesser convictions of transportation for prostitution of his ex-girlfriends, Cassie and Jane. While these were technically the lesser of the five charges which were originally brought against Diddy (in terms of how long his sentence would be) he could still face a maximum of 10 years for each count meaning he could be sentenced to a total of 20 years.

Of course, this is still a win for Diddy, had he been charged with racketeering, it could have been very likely he would have spent the rest of his life behind bars. The defense immediately filed for bail and the musician had reportedly even planned a welcome home party. But Diddy’s victory was somewhat short-lived.

Diddy is too dangerous

PEOPLE reports that Combs’ defense had proposed the music mogul be immediately released on a $1 million bond which would have been co-signed by his mother, sister and the mother of his daughter. In a letter it was stated that he would be restricted to only travelling to the states of Florida, California, and New York. He would also surrender his passport and be subject to regular drug testing.

The defense argued that Diddy was not a flight risk and that he had demonstrated his “trustworthiness and cooperation” throughout the prosecution. However, that could certainly be debated.

Ultimately, Judge Arun Subramanian ruled that the rapper was to remain in custody earlier this week as he stated that Diddy’s attorneys had failed to prove he posed “no danger to any person.” Explaining his reasoning, the Judge cited an alleged incident of violence committed by Diddy against a woman in June 2024, while he was already under investigation. Subramanian told the defense, “You full-throatedly in your closing argument told the jury that there was violence here.”

What happens now?

Diddy’s sentencing is scheduled for October 3rd meaning he will remain in custody until said date. Right now it’s impossible to guess how lenient or harsh the Judge will decide to be. In the letter to Subramanian, the musician’s attorneys claim that the “sentencing guidelines” for his convictions recommend 21-27 months and they also pointed out that Diddy has already served 10 months at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn.

If the judge is kind to Diddy then he could serve mere months behind bars. That is if Donald Trump doesn’t step in with a last-minute pardon. The rapper’s ex-girlfriend, Cassie Ventura, has also vowed to continue fighting.
