Few people can point exactly to the moment that ruined their life — Kristin Cabot is one of them, and she has video evidence. In one of the memetic highlights of this year, Cabot was caught on a routine Coldplay concert kiss cam, usually a cute moment. The only issue for Cabot was that she was canoodling with… her boss.
Worse still, Cabot was the head of HR at her company. This is the sort of thing people typically receive warnings about from HR departments, no matter where you work. It was the perfect storm — the sheer goofiness of them ducking for cover when the camera caught them, the internet making jokes about the scenario, and Chris Martin’s own ex joining in on the fun.
Furthermore, both of their personal lives started unraveling after the video went viral. And now — through a profile in The Times — Cabot chose to finally give her side of the story to close the year off.

According to Cabot, it was all because of the alcohol. A High Noon, to be exact. Contrary to widespread assumption, Cabot was not having an affair with her CEO, Andy Byron — well, not the way she specifically defines an affair, at least. In her recollection of events, Cabot says she had already separated from her husband at the time, unlike Byron.
Cabot and Byron were apparently close friends. So close, in fact, that when Cabot’s friends invited her to the VIP box at the Coldplay show, she brought Byron as her plus one. Incidentally, Cabot was informed that the husband she was separated from would also be at the show, though not near them. So if you thought the video was awkward enough, it was actually even more bizarre because the man she was separated from was also in attendance.
“I took accountability”
Cabot claims she never actually had an affair with her former boss and that that was the only day they kissed — the beginning and the end of their short-lived “non-affair.” Cabot explained, “I made a bad decision and had a couple of [alcoholic] High Noons and danced and acted inappropriately with my boss,” she continued. “And I took accountability, and I gave up my career for that. That’s the price I chose to pay.”
The story took a darker turn when the sudden interest in her private life led some people to start harassing her family. It got even worse for Cabot because, in addition to her family being harassed and her losing her career over a silly affair, she now has to contend with her children being angry with her over the blowback from her decisions.
Looking back, Cabot still doesn’t understand why she even went viral. She explains that even if she were having an affair, it wouldn’t be anyone’s business. She also revealed that she hired a publicist to revamp her reputation online. “I’m not some celebrity,” she said. “I’m just a mom from New Hampshire.” But what is a celebrity, really? Is it not just someone who is well known for some reason?
