TikTok beauty influencer Mikayla Nogueira is in hot water with her fans once again – this time for allegedly faking what appears to be a Boston accent to generate more views.
Nogueira has been a part of the social media platform since 2020. The TikTok star gained recognition after posting various makeup tutorials and reviews during the pandemic. That same year, Nogueira received the American Influencer Award for Emerging Makeup Artist.
Since then, the influencer would obtain over 14 million followers and over a billion likes on her TikTok account, but not without a few controversies. The list includes Nogueira ranting about the long hours she puts in as a social media influencer and accusations of falsely promoting a mascara line by allegedly adding lash extensions to her eyes and claiming it was the product.
The most recent controversy surrounding Nogueira comes after an old video of the 24-year-old resurfaced online. In the now-viral clip — shared at the end of February by TikTok user @whointheworldisthisgirl — Nogueira, a college student at the time, opened up about her experience at Bryant University in Rhode Island and encouraged potential students to check out the Fisher student center.
As the post circulated online it made headlines. The commotion was caused by fans noticing that Nogueira’s recognizable accent wasn’t present in the video. Some claimed that they knew Nogueira was faking her accent, while others expressed that the star was using her professional voice for the clip.
Although Nogueira hasn’t addressed the comments regarding her accent recently, she did provide insight about where her accent originates from during a past TikTok livestream.
In the video, Nogueira revealed that she was planning to take a break from TikTok because she was tired of constantly being ridiculed for her accent, which the beauty guru boldly claimed was not a Boston accent but rather a redneck accent she developed growing up in East Freetown, Massachusetts. She said,
“I’m done with the voice comments. I can’t do it anymore. I told y’all I’ve been made fun of for my voice my entire life. It’s not a f–cking Boston accent. I’ve already said that. It’s a f–king redneck accent from where I’m from.”
To date, Nogueira continues to share makeup tutorials and vlogs on her TikTok account despite the fake accent controversy.
At this time, no additional details have been released to the public.
