Kate Middleton’s pal confirms ‘things have not been plain sailing’ as her absence from Royal Ascot raise questions

Here's the bigger picture.

The Princess of Wales was noticeably absent from the second day of Royal Ascot this year, leaving royal watchers and attendees puzzled. Initially listed to join senior royals in the carriage procession, her name was quietly removed from the programme shortly before the event began.

Kensington Palace quickly addressed the situation, explaining that a “miscommunication” had occurred in the initial carriage list. A spokesperson stated that Ascot had been informed in advance of the Princess’s decision not to attend, but the incorrect programme was issued in error. While this clarification explained the logistical mishap, it did little to quiet the buzz both at Ascot and among royal enthusiasts, who were curious about the reasons behind Kate’s absence from such a prominent event.

Royal Ascot is not just an annual horse racing event; it is a cornerstone of the royal calendar, steeped in tradition and grandeur. The Princess of Wales has become a pivotal figure in the event over the years, with her attendance eagerly anticipated by fans and fashion commentators alike. Her outfits often set trends, and her warm public demeanor adds a modern touch to the deeply traditional gathering. This year, however, it was Prince William who represented the couple, riding in the first carriage alongside King Charles, Queen Camilla, and Prince Saud bin Khalid al-Saud of Saudi Arabia.

While William’s solo appearance did not go unnoticed, much of the attention fell on Kate’s absence, particularly given the presence of many of the couple’s close friends and family members. Among those in attendance were Thomas van Straubenzee, Princess Charlotte’s godfather, and his wife Lucy, as well as James Meade, a longstanding friend of William. Kate’s mother, Carole Middleton, and her sister-in-law, Alizée Thevenet, were also present, adding to the sense that this was an event where the Princess would have been expected to attend.

While the Palace avoided delving into specifics, sources close to the Princess have suggested that her absence was a conscious decision to manage her schedule and prioritize her health. Having announced her remission from cancer just months ago, Kate is reportedly easing back into her royal duties at a measured pace. In the days leading up to Ascot, she had already attended several high-profile engagements, including Trooping the Colour and Garter Day. These events, while joyous, are also demanding, involving long hours and significant public attention.  Event organizers at Royal Ascot were quick to acknowledge the disappointment of the Princess’s absence, but also expressed understanding.
