The Academy Awards never cease to amaze. A little less than a year ago, Will Smith assaulted Chris Rock in a moment that will live in Oscars infamy. This year, another brutal attack has sadly taken place. Ke Huy Quan has assaulted our emotions — and we’re not sure if anyone is going to recover.
In what ended up being a story fit for the silver screen, Ke Huy Quan lived out an American dream in star-studded fashion. After entering the Hollywood atmosphere in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom at the age of 12, the now-51-year-old Vietnamese-American actor and entertainer skyrocketed from 30 years of obscurity, directly onto Hollywood’s biggest stage (literally) to accept the Academy Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his stellar turn in Everything Everywhere All at Once.
In an interview with Variety, Key Huy Quan discussed his audacious win and what comes next. “I had a conversation with my agent,” he states. “I’m so worried that this is only a one-time thing.”
Frankly, it’s fair to be worried for the future — who isn’t? But in Ke Huy Quan’s case, the guy just won an Oscar, so we hope he can rest easy for a while. Though perhaps his pragmatic approach to show business is the very thing that got him in a postion to win in the first place, and with that in mind — you do you, Ke ‘ole buddy.
When asked what he has planned next, Ke Huy Quan revealed that his wheels are already turning.
“I attended an event recently and sat next to Cate Blanchett. I told her that I don’t know what I’m going to do next, but I feel I have a responsibility to do something good, and that I don’t want to disappoint all the people that have supported me. And she said, ‘Just go with your heart and be irresponsible: Don’t worry about what other people think. Choose something that you believe in, choose something that you love, and things will work out.’”
In the end, we’re reminded of The Goonies. They never say die. As long as Ke keeps that in mind, all will be taken care of.
