There isn’t much known yet about the project, but according to Variety‘s sources, the show will be a political thriller in which De Niro will play a former President of the United States. Newman, Oppenheim, and Pulitzer Prize Winner Michael Schmidt will serve as writers for the series, with the former two on board as executive producers. De Niro will also serve as an executive producer as will Jonathan Glickman of Panoramic Media.

If this does go forward it will mark the actor’s first regular television role, after the last television role he was reported to undertake, 2016’s Prime Video mafia drama from David O. Russell, was scrapped. This was due to the sexual assault allegations against Harvey Weinstein, who was the executive producer at the time. Of course, De Niro has experience working with Netflix in the past, notably his role in the award-winning film by Martin Scorsese, The Irishman, in which De Niro also acted as a producer.

Newman has a long-standing history with the streaming giant Netflix, having started out with the critically acclaimed Narcos in which he acted as writer, executive producer, and showrunner. He is also serving as executive producer on the upcoming Netflix series Griselda, which will see Sofía Vergara take on the mantle of Griselda Blanco, the infamous cocaine queenpin.
