‘Start a new journey of our own’: Tori Spelling and Dean McDermott ending 18 years of marriage with ‘great sadness’

The news comes as a bit of a surprise—perhaps even for Spelling.

After 18 years together, it appears Tori Spelling and Dean McDermott are calling it quits and going their separate ways. However, the news either dropped without Tori having a chance to be in on the conversation, or she wasn’t ready to tell the world yet, as she and McDermott seem to be on different pages.

According to People, McDermott posted a message on Instagram on Saturday announcing that the marriage was over and that he and Spelling had decided to split. He also asked that the fans respect their privacy as they work their way through these troubling times.

“It’s with great sadness and a very very heavy heart that after 18 years together and 5 amazing children, that @torispelling and I have decided to go our separate ways, and start a new journey of our own. We will continue to work together as loving parents and guide and love our children through this difficult time. We ask that you all respect our privacy as we take this time to surround our family with love and work our way through this. Thank you all for your support and kindness.”

Privacy is exactly what he would have gotten if he had kept his Instagram post to himself, but it comes across as if he posted it as soon as they had made their decision. The Instagram post has since been taken down.

What is odd is that Spelling just posted on her Instagram Friday about a family trip to Beverly Hills. She made the journey all the way from their home in Santa Monica to Beverly Hills to visit her old stomping grounds with her family. They stayed in the Beverly Hills Hilton and treated their daughter Stella to a wonderful 15th birthday in the 90210.

Shortly after Spelling posted about a great family adventure, McDermott posts that the marriage is coming to an end. They are definitely not on the same page, but that shouldn’t come as a surprise to the fans who have been up on the developments over the years.

After all, their story started out as an affair when they were both in other relationships. Spelling was married to Charlie Shanian at the time and McDermott was married to Mary Jo Eustace. Since then, their relationship has been the focus of headlines and television shows such as when McDermott had an affair in 2013. Lifetime aired the series True Tori, which recounted the couple working through their issues after McDermott ended his affair. Over the years, there have been signs of problems from a “domestic incident’ in 2018 to Tori visiting an attorney in 2021 with assets, support, and custody on the agenda.

They share five children, Liam (15), Stella (14), Hattie (11), Finn (10), and Beau (5). Hopefully, they’ll all be able to navigate through this separation and divorce smoothly and get on with their lives with as little baggage as possible.
