King commented on this tragic incident, claiming that the cause of this mass murder on the Maine Highway was mental illness and guns. After he shared his thoughts on Twitter, the author received backlash, claiming that he was ignorant about the issue.

King was called out for blaming mental illnesses for gun violence when it could be linked to other things like domestic violence. The Independent reported that the shooter released a Facebook video prior to the highway rampage, where he spoke about his “trauma” and “being molested”. At the same time, those with mental illness told the author that not everyone diagnosed with a mental illness would condone hurting others. They’ve also reminded the author that it’s unregulated gun control is the cause of these shootings, not the people.

ABC News reported that a 34-year-old man allegedly killed his parents and two of their friends days after his release from prison. He then later made his way to Interstate 295 where he began to shoot cars. Bodies of the victims were found around 10:30am, where one of the victims was in critical condition and two other victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries. According to police, the shooting on the highway was random but the incident at home was a targeted attack.

The suspect confessed to killing his parents and was taken into custody. The shooter was charged with four counts of murder.
