‘That was not very myself’ Meghan Markle voices her issues with royal life and why it felt ‘inauthentic’

Meghan felt like royal life was erasing her individuality.

Meghan Markle has taken a swipe at her royal life in the lead up to her new Netflix show. The Duchess of Sussex had some complaints about life as a working royal which will no doubt be seen by the palace as a dig against the firm.

Appearing on the YouTube series, The Circuit, Meghan chatted with the interviewer, Emily Chang and even went out to a local restaurant to continue the interview over some beers and a smashed burger. Meghan spoke about her life and the “As Ever” business before diving into some of her complaints about living within the royal institution. The duchess admits that it was a real struggle to be herself while living and working as a royal.

What did Meghan Markle have to say about royal life?

The As Ever founder confessed to Chang that life as a royal wasn’t all it was cracked up to be. “I couldn’t be as vocal and I had to wear nude pantyhose all the time. Let’s be honest, that was not very myself,” the duchess told Chang. She carried on with the pantyhose anecdote, saying, “I hadn’t seen pantyhose since movies in the 80s when they came in the little egg. That felt a little bit inauthentic. And that’s a silly example.”

It seems like a rather insignificant complaint and while Meghan might think it’s a silly example, it seems to be indicative of how she felt during her brief time living in the U.K.

“It is an example of when you’re able to dress the way you want to dress and you are able to say the things you want to say that are true and be able to show up in a space that is really organically and authentically, that’s being comfortable in your own skin.”

Clearly the duchess did not feel as though she was in control of her own day-to-day life as a royal. She didn’t feel like she was being true to herself. Meghan recently returned to Instagram this year to promote her lifestyle brand, in the last several months she has described what it feels like to regain her voice after so long. She clearly felt stifled as an active member of the royal family.

Her comments to Chang will likely not go over very well with the firm. Prince Harry has worked quite hard to try and maintain the peace between him and his father, although it looks like the chance for a royal reunion may have already passed. Regardless, the duchess’ words may as well be pouring gasoline over it all and lighting a match.
