The apple hasn’t fallen far from the tree as the Depp family continues to court controversy and scandal

The one-upmanship has taken over the Cannes Film Festival.

Heading into the Cannes Film Festival, there was a distinctly high possibility that the lion’s share of the headlines would be taken up by the Depp family, with Johnny and daughter Lily-Rose both making an impact in completely different ways. Sure enough, that’s exactly what’s happened.

The Hollywood exile and former Pirates of the Caribbean star’s mere presence was enough to stir up a media frenzy, with his comeback vehicle Jeanne du Barry opening the proceedings. While there were standing ovations and outpourings of support from his dedicated backers, Brie Larson didn’t take too kindly to being drawn into the conversation when she was questioned on watching the movie based through the lens of his recent legal issues.

On the other hand, the second generation of the burgeoning acting dynasty has left jaws on the floor following the premiere of The Weeknd’s upcoming HBO series The Idol, which itself had audiences standing and applauding in spite of its graphic nature, stomach-churning scenes of sexuality and violence, as well as the bad buzz that’s been following it around since an incendiary behind the scenes report dropped a while back.

There are plenty of era-spanning families to have made a splash in Hollywood, but it would be fair to say the Depps are going about it in a very unique way. Whereas Johnny doesn’t seem all that interested in the tabloid circus that seems to follow him everywhere he goes, Lily-Rose will be hoping to ride the coattails of the scandalous responses and pearl-clutching in danger of overwhelming The Idol to establish herself as an on-camera talent outside of her old man’s looming shadow.

They say there’s no such thing as bad publicity, and this clan is certainly looking to prove it.
