Andor was damn good. Actually, scratch that, it was frikken’ fantastic. Lore-heavy and mythos forward — Andor was unlike anything that galaxy far, far away has ever seen. Surrounding the untold origins of Rebel spy Cassian Andor, this Star Wars show imbued everyone’s favorite space opera with a realism that the franchise has been sorely missing.
Amongst the characters, ships, creatures, and locations displayed during the show’s twelve-episode arc, one in particular has kept fans talking long after the mind-melting finale. Who or what is that, you may ask? Stellan Skarsgård’s Luthen Rael, who else? If you needed a reminder, check out his iconic speech below. I’m getting goosebumps just thinking about it.
Luthen’s addition to the show is integral to Cassian’s development, and provides our heroes with an unwavering North Star to follow through all their espionage-themed antics. Now, with a second season officially on the way, it seems Stellan Skarsgård has an update on where things are headed.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Skarsgård spoke briefly on what we can expect from Andor’s next installment, and how series creator Tony Gilroy has been getting on in the face of Hollywood’s writers’ strike.
“That’s going great. I mean, Tony Gilroy has gone on strike, as of the first of May. He finished the scripts right on the day, and then he shut off the phone and disappeared into a picket line somewhere. So, we’ll see. He claims that the (series) is director-proof and actor-proof, which means that it can’t be destroyed. We’ll see if it works.”
Essentially what it seems Skarsgård is saying here is that this thing is so darn good that it can’t be screwed up by the people bringing it to life. Which frankly, is music to my sci-fi loving ears — and I just hope that with any luck, the actors and directors involved can all be on the same page long enough to bolster what already seems to be a great set of ideas.
Still, it might be a while before we get Andor season two. With the entertainment industry clearly on the rocks, my best guess is that the show won’t be returning to Disney Plus for at least another year. (If not more.)
Sadly the only thing anyone can do now is re-binge the first season, and if that’s not enough — watch a bit of Mando, sprinkle in some Star Wars: Visions, and try not to think about it too long. 2024 will be here faster than you can say Han shot first. Search your feelings, you know it to be true.
