Wade Boggs explains the true story behind his ‘It’s Always Sunny’ episode and drinking one hundred beers in a day

We should all thank Wade Boggs for one of 'It's Always Sunny's' most legendary episodes.

How many beers is too many beers? Well, according to MLB legend and all-around badass Wade Boggs — that question has never needed an answer. Boggs, known far and wide for his antics on and off the field, is no stranger to a real good time.

His hall-of-fame status has only ever been matched by the tall tales surrounding his drinking habits, and that’s all there is to it. So when the folks behind It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia wanted to use Boggs for an episode centered around his unofficial beer-drinking record, how could he say no? In what has gone on to be one of the show’s most memorable installments — The Gang Beats Boggs — is Always Sunny at its finest.

Wade Boggs recently sat down with OutKick to discuss that classic episode and the story behind its inspiration.

“It was on one of those flights from Boston to LA and playing blackjack on the plane with a bunch of the guys. And I had just started and didn’t know that one of the other guys was counting and he said, “Boggs, do you realize that you’re at 45 (beers drank) right now?” And I think we had about another hour or so to go on the flight, so (the final count) was 73 for the flight.”

We’re not sure how much beer is required to take down an elephant, but 73 sure seems like the right number. Seriously, can you picture drinking or eating 73 of anything?

“Then we went out and had a good time in California so we went to 107 beers. So that was the one day.”

This story just keeps getting more and more insane. Not only did he party on the plane, but decided to let the good times roll once he got where he needed to be. Wade Boggs drinking 107 beers in one day is like seeing Neil Armstrong landing on the moon; historic, groundbreaking, and seemingly impossible.

When asked about how the cast handled his story and what it was like to be brought onto the set of the show, Boggs didn’t waste time with long speeches or big words. That’s not his style. Instead, he simply told the truth: It was cool.

“The cast was super cool with the whole idea and they really played it off well.”

Being a part of It’s Always Sunny lore can put anyone on the fast tract to memorable stardom, and Wade Boggs has been no different. Generating some of the most iconic gags TV has ever seen, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is truly a cut above.

“I’ll still be stopped in the airport and I expect a baseball question and they (fans) always ask me ‘how was it doing It’s Always Sunny? that’s my favorite TV show!'”

From now on, let’s all agree to leave the beer drinking to Wade Boggs. Clearly baseball isn’t the only thing this guy is incredible at, and everyone else is simply left playing catch up.
