With the upcoming release of HBO’s much anticipated series The Idol, Lily-Rose Depp has taken the first steps to achieving the star power of her parents. Co-created by musical artist the Weekend and Sam Levinson — creator of the critically acclaimed drama Euphoria— the show will star Depp as Jocelyn, a down on her luck pop star, as she tries to reclaim her spotlight. It isn’t Depp’s first acting gig, the 23-year-old has been in several projects in the last few years and has been nominated for Most Promising Actress four times. Her first project was a cameo appearance in the film Tusk (2014). Directed by Kevin Smith, Depp played a convenience store clerk beside Smith’s own daughter, Harley Quinn Smith. The follow-up of the character would see her acting alongside her mega-star dad, Johnny Depp in Yoga Hosers (2016).
Who is her father, Johnny Depp?
Lily-Rose’s father, Johnny Depp, was born in 1963. With an acting career that spans decades, the actor has 70 movie credits, 11 television series, and a plethora of musical contributions as of the writing of this article. Depp started his acting career with the horror classic A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) and was quickly tapped for more projects. The actor transcended beyond movie roles quickly, landing one of the main roles in the late ’80s drama 21 Jump Street, and adding musical roles to his already impressive repertoire with parts in Sweeny Todd (2007) and Into the Woods (2014).
The nearly 60-year-old actor has starred in blockbuster hits like The Pirates of the Caribbean (2003), The Fantastic Beasts (2016) series, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005), and Alice in Wonderland (2010). Since 2016 the actor’s name has been inextricably linked to that of ex-wife Amber Heard — whom he met in 2011 on the set of The Rum Diaries — after the couple had a very public divorce during which Heard accused Depp of physical abuse. While the lawsuit would ultimately result in a loss for Heard, Depp lost several multimillion dollar contracts over the accusation. The case would be heard by two separate courts in two different countries but the overall consensus from Depp’s former paramours was that Depp himself was not a violent partner. Lily-Rose’s mother, Vanessa Paradis, was one of the women to come forward in Depp’s defense.
Who is her mother, Vanessa Paradis?
Vanessa Paradis, born in 1972, is a French actress, musician, and model. At the age of 14 she shot to international stardom with the song Joe le Taxi. It propelled her career and by 18 she had won the coveted French award the Prix Romy Schneider for both her acting and singing. Paradis has worked with reknowned musical artists like Benjamin Biolay, Lenny Kravitz, Mattieu Chedid, Serge Gainsbourg, and has even been listed as a muse for many of the artists. Paradise has 15 albums to her name and dozens of popular singles.
She began modeling in the early ’90s for Chanel with a bold perfume ad that draped the model in black feathers and cemented her status as a representative of the company for several years. The multitalented artist has appeared in 29 movies and has won 12 awards for her film work. Her best known movies are Noce Blanche (1990), La fille sur le pont (2000), and Café de Flore (2012). She met Johnny Depp in 1998 and the couple had two children together, but ultimately split in 2012.
Lily-Rose seems to be following closely in her mother’s footsteps, though Paradis refused to let her daughter enter the glamourous world of Hollywood until Depp was 15. Both mother and daughter left school at 16 to pursue their creative careers, and both were nominated for Most Promising Actress before they turned 20, though Paradis won the award. The young Depp has even taken up her mother’s mantle as a representative for Chanel. With such incredibly talented parents and an already promising career there is no doubt we will see more of Lily-Rose Depp in the future.
