Florence Pugh to a chatbot? That's a downgrade.

Actor Zach Braff has addressed online rumors that he’s dating an AI chatbot in an Instagram story post.

On Thurs. March 12, the Garden State actor wrote,

I’m not dating a chatbot. I can’t believe I have to type these words. It is a storyline in an upcoming ep of Scrubs. Maybe it came from that? Not sure. But not me. Love, The guy not dating his chatbot. Please update all gossip sites.”

Zach Braff AI chatbot rumor

It all started in a December 16, 2025, episode of the comedy podcast I Need You Guys, hosted by Jenny Slate, Max Silvestri, and Gabe Liedman — joined by guest Kumail Nanjiani — joked about an unnamed “very well‑known TV actor” who was supposedly in a romantic relationship with an AI chatbot, a blind‑item‑style bit that didn’t include any names.

Host Silvestri said on the episode,

There’s a well-known actor who is currently in a romantic relationship with his AI chatbot. And [he] brings the chatbot with him places and talks to the chatbot. I think on the phone or computer or whatever.”

Silvestri supposedly texted the name of the actor rumored to be in a chatbot relationship, and his guests laughed, but no one said the name.

Then, in 2026, comedian Chris Fleming referenced the chatbot rumor on a different podcast, So True with Caleb Hearon, and gave the clue “Mr. Tumnus,” connected to Braff because Fleming had previously described Braff as having “Mr. Tumnus vibes” in an older comedy special. This specific “clue” is what largely steered the anonymous rumor toward Braff on Reddit and TikTok

Fleming’s comment and the original I Need You Guys clip recently resurfaced online, sparking widespread speculation among social media users and gossip outlets. In his post denying the rumors, he shared screenshots of the podcast episode, stating he’d only just found out about the allegations.

After Braff’s denial, a comment said, ‘This is amazing. I think Zach Braff needs to grapple with what about him makes people think this might be plausible.”

Most of the speculation centers on Braff because of fan threads and Reddit posts, but there’s also casual online chatter about other potential names like actors Jason Segel or David Harbour. Neither Segal nor Harbour has addressed the speculation.

Zach Braff and the “Scrubs” reboot

Braff’s otherwise back in the news with the recent Scrubs reboot, where Braff, 50, reprises his iconic role as Dr. John “J.D.” Dorian in a series that brings back legacy characters while introducing new doctors, and according to Braff, will feature a storyline about someone dating an AI chatbot.

Off‑screen, Braff’s romantic history includes high‑profile relationships with Mandy Moore, model Taylor Bagley, and, most notably, actress Florence Pugh from 2019 to 2022, though he’s publicly single in 2026. A Reddit comment noted, “Going from Florence Pugh to an AI chatbot is the downgrade of the century.”

Silvestri has since responded to Braff’s denial on his own social media, stating he has “never mentioned this man’s name in his life” and joked that with current energy prices, “the average American can barely afford to charge their girlfriend.”
