To most casual comic book movie fans, Supergirl has always been a second-tier character. A Kryptonian cousin to Superman aka Kal-El, she has traditionally been portrayed as Clark Kent’s more genteel superpowered cousin in a miniskirt. That image has carried over through the character’s various media adaptations, in the CW’s somewhat successful Arrowverse series or the disastrous 1984 film starring Helen Slater as Kara Zor-El.
But if there’s a filmmaker who can take unloved characters and turn them into superstars, it is Guardians of the Galaxy writer/director and recently installed DC Films head James Gunn. His announcement that the DCEU’s version of Supergirl would be based on the far edgier take found in the DC Comics title Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow has caused an immediate run on the books by fans.
According to a tweet from comic book fan Mike Messina that was retweeted by Gunn himself, the title is now sold out on Amazon:
In the comic Woman of Tomorrow, written by Bilquis Evely, Kara Zor-El was witness to the destruction of Krypton and everyone who lived on it. Landing on Earth, she becomes a bounty hunter searching for the man who killed her dog Krypto and the father of a young girl she befriends named Ruthye.
Supergirl is set for a 2027 release, two years after the relaunch of the DCU Universe with the recently announced film Superman Legacy.
