A passenger at Avalon Airport in Australia recently found himself at the center of a major bomb scare. According to a report by PEOPLE, a simple screening blew up into a high-stakes threat but then completely fizzled out.
On Thursday, May 21, at around 6 am, the situation began to unfold when a suspicious item was flagged during the security screening process. The Guardian reported that the discovery forced the airport into a partial lockdown. Authorities quickly cordoned off an area, and the bomb squad was brought in to investigate what was inside a passenger’s luggage.
The owner of the bag, identified as Sam, was detained while trying to head to his Sydney-bound flight. The problem is that the X-ray screen saw a mechanical device and a cylindrical metal container next to it. However, once the bomb squad arrived, it seemed that everyone had just panicked for no reason. Victoria police confirmed the nature of the items, noting, “The Bomb Response Unit conducted checks on an item, and it was determined to be a laser hair removal device.”
That has to be super embarrassing, that no one thought to check or ask Sam
Insp Nick Uebergang provided more context regarding the specific items that caused the alarm. “It was an electrical laser hair removal and a cardboard-cylinder hot chocolate container,” he told reporters.
The situation became quite tense, and Sam later shared his experience about being held in a police car for four hours. He explained that the authorities were quite thorough, even questioning if his hot chocolate container was a military-grade explosive. “They thought this looked like C4 and they had me stay in the [police] car for four hours,” he said.
The ordeal did not end with the bomb check. In a move to probably cover up for the failure at security, Sam noted that the process continued. “They thought it was a bomb and then they realized it wasn’t a bomb and then they were like, ‘is it illegal drugs?’ and then they had to get it tested and had to get everything tested and that’s why it took so long,” he added.
Despite the frustration of being detained, Sam admitted that he understood why the authorities reacted the way they did. “It was better to be safe than sorry,” he said. “It’s been a horrible day for everybody.”
The airport’s response was defended by a spokesperson, who stated that the “response demonstrates the vigilance of the screening and security processes” and that precautionary measures were “taken immediately to ensure the safety of passengers, staff and the broader community.”
The lockdown caused a ripple effect of delays for other travelers at the airport. Many people were left waiting outside as the police cleared the scene. One traveler named David described the scene to a local radio station, noting that there were people queued up for miles, and that access to the terminal was completely blocked off.
Another passenger named Lisa, who was scheduled for a flight to Brisbane, described the atmosphere as “a bit of mayhem.” Evidently, no one really knew exactly what was happening, despite seeing a heavy police presence arriving at the facility.
For his part, Insp Uebergang had suggested earlier in the day that the situation could have been resolved faster. “It’s fair to say that the person that had the bag probably wasn’t too cooperative with us to start off with, which made things more difficult,” he said. “It probably could have averted things, and we could have got out of here a lot quicker. He wasn’t giving us too much information at all on what was in his bag.”
Sam pushed back against claims that he was uncooperative during the questioning. “I didn’t say anything insulting,” he told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. “I was being civil the whole time. I wouldn’t say this was a good experience for me.” Also, props to Sam for being so chill over a situation I would have been livid in.
Ultimately, Sam was released without facing any charges. Now, it makes sense that security at an airport is sensitive, because a lot of things can go wrong. Just in the past few months, we have had unruly passengers and the horrifying story of someone who sneaked onto the runway. However, every aspect of this story reads like an overreaction, and let me tell you something, ain’t nobody got time for that.
