News of suspended flights first came in around 10:20 AM after reports of a problem occurring on the taxiway. The cause of the problem was apparently being investigated by authorities and by 11:18 AM it was confirmed to be a fatal accident.

What we know so far

While reports on the horrific incident are still coming in, we already know several details which paint a rather traumatizing image. The victim has been identified as a 35-year-old man according to local news outlets. Flight operations were suspended this morning after the man was somehow sucked into the engine of a plane.

The man was apparently being chased by police in the moments before his death. Authorities were unable to stop him from getting onto the tarmac and running directly towards a plan that was already moving.

The airline addressed the situation earlier this morning and confirmed that a man had been injured after an incident involving a jet engine, “We’re aware that one individual has sustained serious injuries involving the aircraft engine.” In a statement it was confirmed that a full investigation is underway into what led to such a tragedy.

“We’re investigating reports of an incident involving our flight V73511 BGY-OVD, which occurred on the ground after boarding was completed and ready for departure.”

Flight disruptions at Milan Bergamo Airport

As you’d expect, the situation has led to numerous flights to and from Milan Bergamo Airport being delayed or outright canceled. Many journeys that were scheduled for today have now been pushed back to tomorrow presumably to give the airport and authorities time to conduct an investigation into the matter.

On X people expressed their shock at the news, one person wrote, “thats a painful death,” while others wanted to know how such an accident could have even occurred, “But like, how? If that’s the plane involved it’s got to be someone who shouldn’t be near it?”

Plane engines are dangerous

Accidents involving planes and their engines aren’t all that rare but this isn’t the first time someone has died under such specific circumstances. In fact, people being sucked into the engines of planes happens more often than you would think. Just last year a person died in a very similar situation after they ran out onto the tarmac at Amsterdam’s International Airport. In another sad case, also from last year, a man by the name of Kyler Efinger ran towards a plane engine during a manic episode, he too lost his life.

Right now we don’t know why the man in Milan was near the plane or why he ran into it’s path as the story is still developing. What we do know is that what occurred was a terrible tragedy.
