In 1993 a man called Gary Sudbrink experienced a very mysterious and almost entirely inexplicable phenomenon when he received a phone call from an unknown individual warning that someone else was impersonating him.
Gary had traveled to Long island to visit his parents for a few days in February of 1993. On the evening of February 8th, he decided to call an old friend in the area by the name of Mike to make plans but what his friend told him left him confused and a little disturbed. During the call Mike told Gary that he had spoken to him over the phone the day prior and that the Gary he had spoken to had told him he had flown in through LaGuardia Airport and he was getting over a cold.
Of course, Gary was more than a little confused as he had most definitely not called his friend the day before, he would have remembered. What’s more, he had flown in through JFK Airport and did not have a cold. Despite the weirdness of the situation the pair chalked it up to a weird coincidence, clearly another man who had the same name and almost identical voice must have called the wrong number. Right?
Gary Sudbrink gets a disturbing phone call
Around 10:30pm things took a rather disturbing turn as Gary received a call himself. Upon answering he was met by what can only be described as a robotic-sounding voice. Luckily Gary thought to hit record meaning there is audio of the strange conversation. The distorted voice has a message for Gary, although what it says doesn’t make a whole load of sense.
“Is Gary Sudbrink there?” The mysterious voice asks twice. Gary responds in the affirmative and asks if this is Steven (his brother) playing some sort of prank. The voice ignores his question and goes on to ask how long he’s going to be back from Texas. According to a Reddit thread, Gary never told anyone he was coming back from Texas, he intended to surprise his parents, so how could this stranger know he was back home?
Later in the call the voice cryptically tells him “You’re being impersonated by the other voice.” This very much sounds like it has something to do with the mysterious imposter who called Mike the day before Gary. Just after 11pm, the caller calls back, they allude to aliens and UFOs saying, “Keep an eye on the skies,” while repeating many of the phrases they, or it, have said before.
A few days later they called again. This time the implication that the source was extra-terrestrial in origin was even more overt. “We come. To be within this planet,” it tells Gary, “To visit the many. To be contacted. As the same. With you.” It then warns of “government interference.”
Who or what was that?
It’s now been well over 30 years since the mysterious phone calls and still it’s got people stumped. Some believe that Gary has a doppelganger out there, a year earlier, his brother claimed to have seen someone identical to Gary driving in a car similar to his on the highway, but that still leaves many (if not more) unanswered questions.
Theories range from aliens impersonating Gary to try and learn more about the human race to the much more grounded and believable possibility that this was some sort of hoax. But if that’s the case Gary Sudbrink has never admitted as such.
