A Cinnabon employee who went viral for using racist language in a video has denied she is prejudiced. Crystal Wilsey, 43, said Monday that she has a “colored” son as proof she is not racist. The former worker from Wisconsin was fired after a video showed her yelling at a Somali couple at a store in Ashwaubenon last week.
According to NY Post, Wilsey used the n-word multiple times while talking to the Somali pair who were filming her. She also said out loud that she was racist. The video was posted on TikTok and quickly spread online. Court records show Wilsey has been charged with more than a dozen crimes over the past 20 years.
After losing her job, Wilsey went on social media to defend what she did. “P.S., to the racism, if you look at my Facebook from 2010, you’ll see on there that I have a blended family, and my son was colored,” she said on a TikTok video on Monday.
She blamed her son’s darker skin on a medical condition
Wilsey later wrote in a comment that her son actually has Addison’s disease, which made his skin darker. She said he was called “chocolate” because of his brown skin. Addison’s disease is a rare condition that affects the adrenal glands and can cause skin to darken.
Court records show Wilsey has a long history of legal problems across the Midwest going back almost 25 years. In 2001, she was arrested for disorderly conduct and domestic abuse and got 12 months probation. In 2002, she faced marijuana charges in Menominee County, Wisconsin.
In 2009, she was arrested again for disorderly conduct in Brown County and spent three days in jail. In 2015, she was charged with drunk driving in Hobart, Wisconsin, and spent 20 days in jail. In 2016, she got 90 days in jail for disorderly conduct in Outagamie County.
In February 2022, Wilsey was charged with child endangerment and marijuana possession after being pulled over in Erie County, Ohio. She pleaded no contest and got two years probation.
Her supporters set up a fundraiser after she was fired, which has raised over $110,000. The page blames the Somali customers for the incident.
Wilsey has responded to critics on TikTok, saying she was defending herself. She claimed the Somali couple started the argument first and that people do not know what happened before the recording began.
