Real-life Batman catches burglar in Cape Coral while wearing zip-up onesie that gave him confidence

A Florida man proved that heroes come in all forms when he stopped a burglary suspect early Wednesday morning while wearing Batman pajamas. Kyle Myvett of Cape Coral became an overnight sensation after detaining a burglar in his neighborhood around 2 a.m., all while dressed in his favorite zip-up Batman onesie.

The incident began when Myvett’s home security cameras alerted him to someone breaking into his vehicle. Still dressed in his Batman pajamas, he went outside to investigate and found 20-year-old Justin Schimpl rummaging through his truck. Myvett then tracked the suspect to his neighbor’s garage, where he detained him until Cape Coral Police officers arrived on scene.

When asked about his choice of superhero sleepwear, Myvett explained his preference for the Dark Knight over other comic book characters. “I don’t have a Superman pajama because he’s kind of – if you’re impervious and invincible, you’re not really brave,” Myvett told WSAZ. His background in corrections helped him keep the suspect calm during the incident, but he credited his Batman pajamas for giving him extra confidence.

Cape Coral police credit quick-thinking neighbor with successful arrest

Police identified Schimpl as someone known to law enforcement from previous investigations. Detectives determined that he had broken into multiple vehicles in the Southeast Cape Coral neighborhood, stealing various items, including two pairs of Ray-Ban sunglasses worth $300 each, cash, a woman’s wristlet, and more than $500 in gift cards.

During questioning, Schimpl claimed another person was with him during the burglary, but the name of his alleged accomplice changed multiple times. The Lee County Sheriff’s Office helicopter and Cape Coral Police Department K9 unit searched the area but found no other suspects. While real-life superheroes have inspired comic book stories before, this case shows how ordinary citizens can make extraordinary differences.

Schimpl was transported to the Lee County Jail and charged with two counts of burglary of an unoccupied conveyance (unarmed), a third-degree felony, two counts of petit theft under $750, a first-degree misdemeanor, and one count of burglary of an occupied dwelling, a second-degree felony. Cape Coral Police praised Myvett’s actions in their Facebook post, stating “Thanks to a quick-thinking neighbor in his Batman pajamas, another burglary suspect was put behind bars.”

The case has drawn comparisons to fictional vigilantes, though unlike the debate over how the world would react to a real-life Superman, Myvett’s heroic act was met with universal praise from his community and law enforcement. Myvett admitted he had left his truck unlocked overnight due to feeling safe in his neighborhood, but his quick response prevented further crimes in the area. Police also shared photos of officers posing with Myvett in his heroic Batman sleepwear, celebrating the successful arrest.
