3D In Crysis 2: “James Cameron Loved What He Saw”

Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli was speaking confidently to Edge magazine in the latest issue; about the luscious visuals in the eye popping FPS Crysis 2. Crytek have been working on the Cry Engine 3 for quite some time and this latest version of the game engine, is being used in the long awaited sequel to the original (and virtually unplayable) Crysis game. And for the record: yes I’m aware this company is overly fond of a particular three letter word.

Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli was speaking confidently to Edge magazine in the latest issue; about the luscious visuals in the eye popping FPS Crysis 2. And for the record: yes I’m aware this company is overly fond of a particular three letter word.

For those of you who’ve been buried in the harsh and cruel worlds of Battlefield, Call Of Duty, or Medal Of Honour, you may not have been keeping up with this very promising title. The deal is this, Crysis was argued to be the best looking game EVER back in 2007, it won countless awards for genuinely jaw dropping and beautiful visuals, incredibly polished gameplay, and a rich gaming universe. The biggest catch was that when the game was first released, the amount of processing power it required to run it (because of the sheer depth and detail to the physics and textures) made it literally too demanding for even the best PCs.

So now it’s 2011 and Crysis 2 is lined up for a March 22nd release. Crytek made a bold move (with EA influencing, almost certainly) to bring Crysis 2 to the consoles this time around, which caused a lot of people to get excited because consoles operate on a fixed technical spec, and game developers can choose to use as much or as little power as is on offer. So basically it means everyone will have a chance to get their hands on it…and have it work.

If you haven’t seen any footage then I suggest you watch the video below. Honestly, this game is stunning. Like Uncharted 2 meets GT5 then ‘pushed through the most advanced graphics engine on the planet’ stunning.

Getting back to the headline (oops), Crysis 2 will support 3D. Back at E3 2010 Crytek held preview testing booths for those, patient enough to queue.  Other 3D announcements like Killzone 3, Nintendo 3DS etc, came at the same time, but people were reporting that the 3D in Crysis 2 didn’t work. There was a lot of worry about all of a sudden, and folks criticized Crytek’s 3D implementation.

But that was last year and it would seem they’ve amended the problems and brought it up to scratch. To be honest this was a day one purchase for me regardless of the 3D, but now that Avatar man James Cameron has had a sneak peek behind Crytek’s hi-def curtains and was impressed. Anyone with an expensive 3D TV just might be in for a real treat.

Mr Yerli said to Edge:

“We’ve done a lot of research into 3D experiences, the UI and whatnot. And a lot of this knowledge is now in the Crysis 2 3D experience. That’s why we have, in my opinion, a benchmark 3D implementation. I’ll even claim it’s the same as Avatar’s status in 3D. James Cameron has seen Crysis 2, and he loved what he saw because his eyes are trained for 3D more than anyone else’s, and that makes me confident that we have a super-high-end 3D experience on all formats.”

With the Nanosuit powers, the mind blowing graphics, and the fact it’s not Call Of Duty, Crysis 2 may be the potential champion of 2011, and that’s no mean feat.
