A recent announcement from the Sony UK managing director, Fergal Gara, has stated that they were surprised by the ongoing success of their Dark Souls inspired RPG, Bloodborne.

Gara went on to praise the somewhat surprising triumph of the Playstation 4 exclusive and also suggested that the game’s timing may have played a key role in its success.

It did surprise us, We had expectations to do well. We looked at the Souls series as a frame of reference, and we thought we could do better than that. We did—and then some. Relative to some of our sister territories, we were being quite ambitious, but even that proved to be conservative.

I think Bloodborne might have just landed just at the right time; it was a relatively quiet time, it was a very high quality title and a great platform differentiator for us, We were caught a little bit behind in terms of the volume, but we were able to chase it and maximise its potential.

In reality, the news that Sony are overly satisfied with the performance of Bloodborne is far from unwarranted, especially when considering it sold over one million copies in the last month alone. There is also the small matter of the game’s developer, From Software, to consider. With the release of the Dark Souls series already under their beltsit’s no surprise that its sister game has performed so well.

It also seems that Fergal Gara wasn’t the only one to voice his congratulations. In an unexpected move, Xbox executive, Phil Spencer, has also shown a level of admiration after saluting Sony and From Software for reaching such a high sales figure.

Tell us, do you think the success of Bloodborne could pave the road for a surge in new Dark Souls style games? Sound off below!
