Since being officially announced last week, the reveal trailer for Call Of Duty: Infinite Warfare published on YouTube has attracted a rather substantial amount of negativity judging by the site’s – admittedly rather primitive and abusable – Like/Dislike system.

As of writing, the trailer currently has 1.2 million dislikes from over 14 million views and just 261,000 likes, and while there’s undoubtedly a snowballing effect happening right now with ever-growing number of down votes, there’s clearly a large proportion of series fans out there who aren’t particularly impressed with the focus on a future war setting.

Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg responded to the lukewarm reception previously (the dislikes stood at 400,000 at that point), defending the figure to investors by saying Call Of Duty: Black Ops II saw a similar reception, but went on to become the series’ most successful entry ever.

We’ve seen this in the franchise before. The reveal trailer for Black Ops II, which took the franchise into the future for the first time, had the most dislikes of any reveal trailer we had ever made at that time. And that, of course, went on to become our most successful game ever.

The dislikes for Black Ops II‘s trailer, while high, stand at a paltry 60,000 – a far cry from the number recorded for Infinite Warfare. Likewise, DICE’s recently revealed Battlefield 1, which is set in World War I, currently has just 18,000 dislikes from 19 million views and over 1 million likes.

Could this be a sign that the future setting for the industry’s biggest FPS franchises has plummeted in popularity? Battlefield 1‘s reception seems to suggest that’s the case, but we won’t know for sure until Call Of Duty: Infinite Warfare launches on November 4.
