Two years ago, Demon’s Souls tore through the gaming community and redefined the word challenge for a younger generation. A new age of gamers, coddled with walks through the park like Call of Duty, were ripped a new one as they tried to save the kingdom from an infestation of demons. Now, the game that kicked your ass and dared you try again is back with a spiritual successor in Dark Souls.

Developed once again by From Software, Dark Souls, to be released on the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 on October 4, is looking to take the previously successful formula and make a few interesting tweaks. As in Demon’s Souls, players can leave clues throughout stages for others when they are connected to their network, helping those who have ventured into the level after them. This time around, however, it looks like a co-op mode is available.

From Software is looking to continue the mix of hack-n-slash action with RPG elements while adding new weapons, spells, and classes. Also, for those of use who still have nightmares about how hard the previous game was, it has been rumored that the developers are looking to make Dark Souls “significantly harder”, which may come as a blessing to the hardcore masses while turning away more casual gamers.

In the new trailer, which seems to relish in your failure, the new environments and creatures look absolutely stunning. Set to a perfect tune by The Silent Comedy, this latest preview is simply astounding. Try to keep your jaw up while you watch below, and leave your thoughts in the comments.
