Exclusive Interview: Pewter Games Studios Talks The Little Acre

It's a great time to be a fan of adventure games. Thanks to developers such as Double Fine and Telltale Games the genre has seen a resurgence of popularity, and it doesn't seem to be slowing down any time soon. One of the most interesting adventure games in the works is Pewter Games Studios' The Little Acre. Taking place in 1950s Ireland, The Little Acre blends fantasy with one of the worst time periods in the country's history.

WGTC: The Little Acre is currently set to release on PC and Xbox One. Is the current plan for the versions to see a simultaneous release?

CC: We’d really like to do a simultaneous release, but things take a bit longer to prepare for when releasing on Xbox One than on Steam. We’re still working out whether we’ll be able to do it, but if not, the releases will be as close to together as possible.

WGTC: How close is the game to being completed, and when can fans expect to see a release?

CC: Close, very close! We plan to publicly announce our release date soon, so stay tuned!

WGTC: How has it been working with Microsoft, and have there been any unexpected hurdles developing on Xbox One?

CC: It’s been really great. In August we got to bring The Little Acre to the ID@Xbox Pre-PAX event, which was the first time we had demoed the game to the public outside of Ireland. It was scary, but worth it. Just like actually releasing a game on Xbox One!

WGTC: What sets The Little Acre apart from other adventure games?

CC: We think adventure games are a great way to tell a story, but often the gameplay interrupts the flow of the narrative. We’ve done our best to find a balance of difficulty which avoids this problem, while still being a rewarding experience. While we do try to set ourselves apart in a few ways — such as storytelling technique and perspective swapping — it’s most likely the aesthetic that sets it apart more than any other single thing. There isn’t any game that looks quite like it.

WGTC: Give us your best pitch on why gamers should keep an eye out for The Little Acre.

CC: We’ve tried to make something that could be enjoyed by as many people as possible (sometimes at the same time!), no matter their age or experience. Something that feels new, while still feeling like a good ol’ adventure. If you’re reading this and it sounds like something that might interest you, please check out The Little Acre early next year!
