By now, I certainly hope that any lover of survival horror gaming has gotten their chance to play the recently released Resident Evil 2 remake. Being someone who was made a lifelong fan of the franchise after experiencing the 1998 original, I’ll say that I’ve really been enjoying my return trip to Raccoon City. Granted, I’d hoped for more of a balance between new and old previously achieved by 2002’s remake of the first Resident Evil, but Capcom’s latest effort is still worthy of much applause.
As of the time of this writing, I’ve completed Leon A and am in the process of working my way through Claire B, so I’d say I’m qualified to declare this as the most intense RE game I’ve played to date. Maybe it’s the thick atmosphere or the uncertainty of what’s around the next corner, but I think you’ll agree with me on how this bad boy constantly has players on edge.
To my delight, Resident Evil 2 has lit up social media in the past couple weeks. More often than not, it’s because of people sharing their close encounters with Mr. X (or two of them, if you were a certain unlucky speedrunner), but the latest offering sees a fan creating a mod shifting the gameplay to a first person perspective. In fact, you can check out an example of Praydog’s work at the top of this article that puts a new spin on Leon A’s earlier moments.
If that weren’t enough, we have one more clip to share (seen above) which actually features the aforementioned Mr. X. Needless to say, experiencing him in first person arguably makes the close call quite a bit scarier, though I’ll forever prefer the third person perspective in any sort of game.
Personal feelings aside, maybe it would be wise for Capcom to include both first and third person modes if and when a Resident Evil 3: Nemesis remake sees the light of day. Hey, they’ve said as long as we the fans demand it, such a thing will come to fruition. Come to think of it, those options could be presented in a Gold Edition of Resident Evil 2 down the line, but it’s really up to the publisher if they want to explore that avenue.
