For years, fans have been begging Final Fantasy VII to be remade in beautiful high definition. Today is not the day that will finally come to reality. However, Square might have accidentally put in motion something that will be just as good.

Square Enix has announced they’ll be releasing the PC version of Final Fantasy VII exclusively to their online store sometime “soon.” While the game isn’t the full remake that fans have been clamoring for, it’s not without its improvements. The new version will offer its own achievements, as well as a character booster to max out your HP, MP and Gil in order to get past the sticky parts.

The original PC release of the game, if you can find it, doesn’t exactly play well with the setups of today. I would imagine this re-release is meant to be a bit easier on the system.

Conspiracy time! I think Square might have released an updated version of the game in order to make it easier for the mod community to make the HD release themselves. There have been a few attempts over the years to update everything, all turning out pretty bad due to the dated way the game runs. HD mod packs have been successful for games such as the original Deus Ex and Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. It’s not outside of the realm of possibility.

We’ll update you with more release details as they become available to us.
