Five Nights At Freddy’s creator Scott Cawthon has debuted the first teaser trailer for his upcoming spinoff of the massively popular (especially on YouTube) series of low-fi horror titles: Five Nights At Freddy’s World. After watching it, we can’t help but feel that we’re being trolled. The trailer starts by reminding us of the horror we’ve faced at the hands of Freddy and his armada of animatronic nightmares before revealing to us…..that they’re cute?

From there, we’re treated to top down gameplay and what seems to be heavily Final Fantasy inspired turn based combat featuring Freddy and friends facing off against evil robots and cyborg shellfish. The game then goes on to tell us that it’s starring basically every monstrosity from the Five Nights At Freddy’s canon.

The graphics are reminiscent of the stellar SNES title Super Mario RPG, and combat seems to take the form of hurling various series paraphernalia at foes, including Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzas. The cutesy new look to the animatronics still endows them with a creepy thousand yard murder stare, so there is likely much more to the game than the trailer suggests.

Speaking with Rock Paper Shotgun in September, Cawthon had this to say about his upcoming title.

“The new game that I’m working on will be called FNAF World. It will not be a horror game, but a role playing game where you create a party using the huge selection of characters from the FNaF games, including the classic, withered, toy, phantom, and nightmare versions.”

While the game doesn’t fit in any shape or form with the themes of the previous entries, it’s hard to tell if this is another example of Cawthon’s outlandish sense of humor, or if he’s really decided to move in an entirely different direction for his first spinoff of the series that made his name. The game is set to be released sometime next year, and if previous titles are any indication, you can bet that we’ll find out about the release date five minutes before the game goes live.

In the meantime, fans of the series’ traditional jump scares can enjoy a Halloween treat, as Five Nights At Freddy’s 4 has released a free Halloween update today, adding a special Halloween mode and making updates to the main game.
